High School Meeting Reflection
On a gloomy February day in 2013, I was set to meet my high school counselor for the first time. My mom and I arrived at Niles West and found ourselves waiting in the guidance counselor’s office to decide my classes for freshman year. “Jason?” My head tilted up. “I can meet with you now” my counselor said with an inviting smile. Going into the meeting, I was dead set on taking a debate class in order to be on the debate team. My dream in eighth grade was to be a lawyer, and I thought being in debate was the solution. As I left the meeting, my debate dreams folded as I was not signed up for any debate classes. However, in its place was another educational field: business. Coincidentally, I was so fickle in the meeting that I signed myself up for Business and Technology. I was off my original road map, but I thought I’d make the best out of …show more content…
Niles West’s stellar business program, DECA chapter, and inspirational business teachers have prepared me for this moment. The funny thing is, I never intended on majoring in business. The debate classes my eighth grade self planned on taking led me to believe that I wanted to become a lawyer. I even crafted an eighth grade career project on becoming a lawyer. However, thanks to my counselor’s guidance and school’s opportunities, I discovered a business major as my true dream and future career path. Essentially, my business passion would not be possible if it was not for Niles West. The school offered DECA and an unmatched business curriculum that extinguished my early apprehensions of business. How exactly did Niles West prepare me for my post-secondary plans? It offered me a treasure chest of opportunities in all facets of education and extracurricular activities that culminated in my pursuit of business at the University of

My heart raced from the ridiculous amount of coffee I had consumed that morning. I tentatively stepped into the dark, empty classroom and took a seat in the second row. As an English major, I resented the fact that I was required to take US History 201. I disliked history, and I heard rumors that my professor, Dr. Grimm, was a tough grader. The only contingent that caused me to feel slightly happy was the fact that I would be in the same class as Hannah Colasurdo, my longtime best friend. I had known Hannah since I was ten years old, and she had been there for me though my best and worst moments. Little did I know that this history class would cause me to fall to one of the lowest points of my entire life.…

The assessment of the neighborhood was completed individually on separate occasions and as a group on our way to a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting. As a group our windshield survey was captured while driving from Northeastern Hospital, west on Allegheny Avenue, and south on Kensington Avenue. The time of the window survey was approximately 5:45 on a warm Tuesday evening. We decided to drive along the smaller side streets after the meeting, in order to get a different view of the community. It was a busy time of the day, many people walking, while others rode bikes to their destinations. The streets were lined with scattered trash, many building stood no longer occupied. Everywhere you looked people were gathered on the sidewalk or sitting on the steps of boarded up storefronts. Some were quenching their thirst from a brown bagged covered bottle. As we pulled up to NA meeting, we sat in the car a few minutes to observe the interaction of the crowd gathered outside of THE LAST STOP which is also a recovery house.…

I was a little nervous attending one of these meetings because I didn’t know what to expect but only know from television shows and movies. What is the reality though? I imagined and painted a picture of what an AA meeting would be like. I pictured a room full of people that were obvious addicts, unkept appearances, offensive hygiene and at least one person smelling of alcohol while moving back and forth in the chair. As I entered the room, my perspective laughed at me and as I looked around I was deceived. It was the complete opposite, most of the members of the group were clean, well-kept and looked healthy. I have never been a room full of worried people trying to stay sober because they started the road to sobriety. To keep their…

I chose to double-major to incorporate multiple aspects of my career goals. As a political science major, I will continue to learn about the United States and local governments which will follow me forward as I attend law school. Majoring in business allows me to be a versatile lawyer. I will have knowledge about finances and business operations which will aid me if I chose to become a criminal defense attorney. Once I open my own law firm, I will be able to employ what I learned from being a business major while operating my own business. Once I receive my bachelor's degree in political science and business, I will most likely attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City to attend their School of…

She thanks the instructor and walks to the advisement center to register for classes. As she waits to be called she feels her stomach growling. She barely noticed her hunger. She started imaging those tender, juicy chicken strips from Whataburger, with the salty fried fries, and the soft moist Texas toast with a nice cold Sprite. “Karla,” she snaps out of her world of food as soon as she hears her name and walks to the advisor’s office. The small office faintly smelled like the cologne her ex-boyfriend uses. She sat on a rough chair while the advisor registered her. After waiting a while, the advisor hands her a paper with the classes she’ll take and what time they start at. She walks out of the office feeling tired yet accomplished. She walks to the parking area where her family was waiting for her. She informs them that she was officially a college student and that she was very hungry. While the family heads to a fast food restaurant to celebrate, the young woman fills her mind of college thoughts. She feels excited to start something new and proud of taking another step into her…

The decision to choose Bryant University for my undergraduate degree was an easy choice to make. Now for my Master’s in Professional Accountancy degree, that decision does not change. As Bryant continues to rise as one of the top business schools in the country, it was clear that this is the school I needed to attend in order to succeed in future business endeavors. Upon finding my spot, I was introduced to the group by an older woman, whom was eager to invite me in to listen to their story. The group were equally as welcoming as she was. While attending the AA meeting, I felt as though I couldn’t help myself but feel very sad for the group while listening to some individuals overcome substance abuse addiction while others relapsed. My thoughts throughout the meeting was how I thought each one of them were courageous to share their stories and amazed on how similar some stories were. My impression on the leader who took leadership of that meeting was very sensitive and ran the meeting very diligently. The meeting opened up with the group reciting the Serenity Prayer. My thought at that moment was wondering…

It was a beautiful summer day at the beginning of my senior year. Students were anxious to meet their teachers and begin the last year of their high school career. There were those excited to graduate that knew exactly what they wanted to do with their life. Then there were those like me who had no idea what college they would be attending the following year. I knew I wanted to go to college, but I had no idea which one I wanted to attend or what my major would be. After I arrived that morning, I walked into the crowded hallway of my 4A public school on my way to my first and hardest class, pre-calculus AP. I was one of the last ones to enter the classroom and had no other choice but to sit next to my ex-best friend. It was already a bad day. Once the bell rang, Mr. Rogers, an older teacher with gray hair and big circular glasses, stood in front of the classroom and began teaching our first lesson. Within five minutes of the lesson, I was already lost. Once he turned around to see if anyone had questions, I was the first one to raise my hand.…

Business is still the most common major. About a fifth of the 1.79 million bachelor’s degrees conferred in 2011-12 were in business (Desilver). In addition, business has been the most common major since 1980-1981. Going to college will set one up for success in life because one will gain experience of living independently and pursuing a passion; however, many people think going to college is a waste of time and money, but statistics shows that people who do not attend college are two times more likely to be unemployed.…
