Hiring A Coach
In the excerpt from the Athletic Director’s Desk Reference they talked about how to handle a coach’s termination. Talking with the Human Resource office for advice and having written documentation supporting the decision to terminate will help with the transition and decision making process as well as seeking legal advice. Firing a coach can be a little more difficult because stakeholder can directly or indirectly get involved in the decision making process, it is essential for the athletic director to consult with the higher administration. The athletic director should keep in mind the needs of the student athlete and how they will take the news of the termination. The guidelines that the article outline helped me understand on how to possible handle a termination. One thing that I never consider until I read the article was the influence the stakeholders and community can have indirectly or directly when it comes to a termination of a coach. I know when it comes to high school sport parents and the community are really involved, they feel like part of the team and can get attached to the coach and have an opinion that they will voice. Keeping that in mind and being ready to deal with those kinds of situation by letting high management deal with it I feel is the most effective way to handle it. I’m still on the fence about coach being fired of the actions of the student athlete because I feel that you only have control to a certain extent and if the coach has done everything they can do, how can they be held accountable. The student athlete literally has the coach future in their hands. The last thing that stood out to me was controlling the communication once the termination becomes public knowledge. In high school nothing spreads fast then good gossip and gossip can always be molded by the person who is repeating, it is essential to be able to control that and have a statement ready so that the situation does not become something that it’s

    As a coach I want to be the leader of a successful program who helps student athletes excel on and off of the field. I will do this by first hiring good assistant coaches around me who can help me bring my vision to reality. It will require dedication from the student athletes in the classroom and in practice and games to be the absolute best they can be in any situation. It will be up to me to instill in my athletes hard work and dedication in everything they do. So I will first need them to respect and maybe even fear me a little bit, but I still need to maintain a close enough relationship with them to where they can consider me a friend and be able to turn to me in any time of need. I will first stress the importance of hard work through drills and conditioning, but at the same time not make it feel like work for them; make them understand there is a reason for all of the things that we do on a daily basis. As a result, I decided to conduct my interview with a professional that is associated with the business operations of athletics. The person that I interviewed was Dawn Reynolds, the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Business and Finance here at the University of Miami. After initially getting in contact with Ms. Reynolds a few weeks ago, I was finally able to meet with her briefly and conduct my interview on November 30, 2010, in room 261 in the Hecht Athletics Center. Just to give a bit of background information about Ms. Reynolds, she is from Elmira, New York and now currently resides in Coral Gables, Florida. She graduated from the University of Miami with a major in Finance and started her career at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia where she worked for four years as their budget coordinator. As a past president of the College Athletics Business Managers Association, she was named the College Athletic Business Manager of the Year in 2003 and has since served on various committees including the ACC Finance Committee and chairs the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. She has worked with the University of Miami for the past 20 years and is currently the Chief Fiscal Officer for the Department and is a member of the executive management team.     After reading these three articles between how coaches and players do not get along with them attacking each other and when a player does something terrible and the coach defends them. We all have been in a situation where we do not want to be talked to by a family member or friend just because he had a bad day, but when you bring that attitude to a sporting event or practice sometimes the player or coach my lose their composure. Which happened in the three articles that I read, dealing with Latrell Sprewell choked his coach PJ Carlesimo during practice, coach Bobby Knight choked one of his own players Neil Reed, and when Rick Carlisle defended Ron Artest and other players he coached after the brawl in Detroit. In reading those articles I feel that they told me that there is either a bad, competitive, or good relationship between a player and coach. The one with Sprewell and Carlesimo, Sprewell who showed up to practice late that day choked his coach Carlesimo because Carlesimo wanted to know where he has been for being late. Although in the article it states that racial comments were said to Sprewell, but later found out that there were no such thing. So Sprewell was fired by the Golden State Warriors, the team he played for at the time, and was suspended by the NBA for the remainder of the season. In the article about Bobby Knight choking his player Neil Reed, it was halftime during a game when Bobby Knight was still coaching the Indiana University 's men 's basketball team and Knight was so upset with his players that the one player Neil Reed said something to Knight and Knight went after him and started choking him. After the news broke out about that incident the Indiana University 's President fined Bobby Knight $30,000 and suspended him three games.     That man is so passionate towards his job, and without him we wouldn’t be where we are today. He literally does everything, whether it’s giving pre-game instructions, setting up practice, or watching out for all of us and making sure we are satisfied.
