1 How would you build and maintain an effective relationship: with children with young People with adults
Building effective relationships with children and young people is essential to their emotional and social growth. Each moment that the teaching assistant and the child interact with one another is an opportunity to develop an effective relationship. There are key strategies and ways of behaving that help nurture affective relationships with children, young people and adults. To gain a child and young person's trust you must show:
Mutual Trust - respect every pupil as an individual,
Assertiveness - without aggression, demonstrate a consistent and caring attitude towards pupils,
Recognition of your own weaknesses,
Good qualities and good manners,
The ability to see the good and potential in children and provide a stimulating and challenging environment,
The desire to share problems and celebrate differences by providing pupils with play and learning activities to extend understanding of themselves, other people and the world around them.
For any effective relationship there has to be positive communication pitched at the correct level. It is imperative to provide a warm responsive environment to help children to understand classroom expectations. The teaching assistant still needs to show that they are in a position of authority while helping children to feel safe and supported in the classroom. On the whole every child needs:
Security
Praise and encouragement
Communication and interaction
Acceptance and love
To maintain an effective relationship with children and young people you must:
1 Listen to the child or young person and ask questions. Communication is a two way process that involves availability to listen to pupils and concentrate on what they say using words and phrases that are age appropriate.
2 Remember pupils names and correct pronunciation
3 Avoid stereotyping and respect each child
