Holmes Extensions: A Reflection Of Service Learning
Service Learning Reflection

A couple of classmates and I had gone to Stanley Holmes Extensions in Atlantic City to help elementary children with homework. Plethora of things had gone well that day. As soon as we had arrived to Stanley Holmes Extensions there was a police officer that had briefly explained what we had to do. Having officer Law explain to us are task was great because we weren't just sitting around when the children had arrived. Helping the children out with homework had also gone well. Most of the children listened when being helped with a problem, and didn't just wonder off or ignore us. Talking to and getting to know the little kids went well. Not one of us had gone up to a child to try to talk to, but instead they came up to us and had asked questions. For example, a boy named Tyreese, he had come up to us and had asked us what are names were, where we were from, what school we were from, and how old we were. Tyresse was the first child I had helped. All I helped him with was some

The clothing that I had on was demonstrating professionalism because I came in wearing acceptable clothing and not in tanks, negative graphic t-shirts, and booty shorts. The way I talked to the children demonstrated professionalism because when the second child started to irritate me, i didn't yell at him or give him dirty looks, but i explained to him why not to yell and why not restart the game when someone was about to win. Professionalism was demonstrated the whole time I was at Stanley Holmes Extensions. The only help that was needed was when no elementary student would come to use for help. This is when officer Law helped out and brought over two children from the other table. Officer Law brought children over to my table a couple of times because not many came over. This was the only situation that I needed help or else there was no help

When I had first volunteered at a preparatory school as a teacher’s assistant, I was thrilled and excited. I enjoyed working with children and I admit, was slightly disillusioned with expectations that the children would be dutiful and effortless to watch over. Unfortunately, all my prior imaginations crashed the second I entered the classroom. Everywhere I saw, it was pure chaos. I dodged a flying crayon as I saw children running around throwing paper airplanes, balls, while others just stared at their iPads, focused on the latest game. Not a single one of them even listened to me or glanced at me as I tried to yell over the loud chatter.…

Waiting eagerly in our school garden, I was about to meet the five fourth graders that I was going to be grouped with for the rest of the year. I was a bit casual about the “meet and greet” because I could not determine how well I would fair with these little children. I could not predict whether these kids will enjoy my company or loathe it. After a lengthy thirty minute wait, the kids began to slowly flood onto the field. I was introduced to each student one by one and the first thought that ran through my mind was “How am I going to connect with someone who’s so different?” They were so reserved and quiet and I found it troubling having to find something to stimulate these them. My mind quickly jumped to all the basic questions to try to…
