The title is both literal and symbolic. In the book, there is a place called City of Bones. It is called the City of Bones because many of the old Shadowhunters are buried there. In the book, Clary and Jace go to the City of Bones to help Clary regain her memories that had been “blocked” by a warlock. The City of Bones is there to help people discover what has been lost or to know what the truth is. It is symbolic because throughout the whole book, Clary is discovering new things about the Shadowhunter world and who her parents really were. She begins to know what the truth is about everything.
This story takes place in New York. In the book, it describes Clary’s apartment in detail. It talks about how it was a very special place to her and her mother. Later in the book, it is shown that their building is a home for refugees from the Shadowhunter world. Her mother was a refugee. Another place that is described is the building in which the Shadowhunters stay in. It is a church disguised as a place for other Shadowhunters to stay when they are in the area. Since the story takes place in New York, it is known that there are always so many people out, no matter the time of day. Also, since there are lots of people, the author shows how many of these people, seemingly ordinary, are actually demons from the other world. There are lots of cultures in New York so it gives the different types of demons and monsters their own background because of what part of New York they were in.
The characters in this book are well developed. Clary Fray, the main character, is developed by how she acts throughout . Jace and Clary develop feelings for each other, but find out in the end that they are brother and sister. I think that moment when they find out the truth about each other and their parents is the climax of the whole story.
In City of Bones, there are many different tones. In a lot of parts of the book, it is very intense,
