Hometown
iPhones, Facebook and Xbox. Twitter, Blogs and Instagram. YouTube, Netflix and Television… Have you ever been so overwhelmed with the pandemonium of the 21st century lifestyle and just needed time to unwind, unplug, regroup, or just take a deep breath? When I am in this state of mind, I know what I have to do. My security lies with the familiar sent of farm animals, small family owned shops, rocky back-roads flattened by cars playing country songs, and houses smeared across acres of fields. Our roots lie in our hometowns. Mine lie in a peaceful little town nestled in a valley, where small-town values are held and our tight knit community pulls together in times of joy and in times of need. This is where I am given an ease and a sense of belonging in which no other town can boast.
Heart racing, scattered thoughts of a stressed mind, and fingers clicking a mile a minute; I’ve become unaware of the outside beauty of the world and consumed in my house studying for finals day after day, only living through a virtual world. I take my lanyard out from my worn backpack and jump into the car as I turn the keys into the ignition. The crisp sounding engine of my silver car brings a relief to my tensed body. My hometown is quaint and small, only taking at most ten minutes to travel across town. All I want is to relax and take a break from my disseminated mind so I decided to go to a family owned restaurant to grab coffee and a bagel. But first, I decide to take a few back roads with my windows rolled down, and my hair sailing in the wind as I take a moment to gather my thoughts. As soon as I arrived I was welcomed with an enormous amount of familiar faces, as usual, who greeted me. Ahh… I could almost feel the anxiousness melting off of me. The hostess happened to seat me at my favorite spot; a couch in the back of the restaurant. As I sat there, time passed so quickly as I closed my eyes and took a break from reality to enjoy my chocolate chip bagel and pumpkin spice latte

It was Tuesday, March first, 2011, my mother woke me up so I can start getting ready for school. I rose with eager anticipation, just four more days until my thirteenth birthday and I just couldn’t wait. I brushed my teeth and hurried down to eat the complimentary breakfast offered to us by the hotel we were staying at. You see we had been staying at a hotel for the past five months because the home we had been renting was foreclosed on so the utility companies turned off the power and the electricity. We had to get down at just the right time so that there was a small crowd but a lot of food so that we can take food back to the room to save for dinner. After breakfast, we…

Later that morning, in the sunlit dining hall, breakfast was being severed. My group sat at the table we sat at the night before. As I started to eat my tater-tots , the events from yesterday filled my mind. My group went snorkeling, both day and night, I could still feel the cold water soak my wetsuit. I remembered that Mr. Lacey, our principal, announced that the school would be leaving today because of a storm. I was disappointed because I payed for three days instead of two,but at least I was having fun.…

The play “Our Town” explores the lives of people (primarily two families) living in a small and quiet American town in the 1900’s. In the first act entitled “Daily life”, the narrator did a good job of guiding the audience’s imagination to set up the ideas of a town in the early 1900’s. The lighting and sound cues made that very successful. The lighting was on cue and was very good at setting the scenes (i.e. brighter for morning sunrise). Realistic sets and props were minimal but, the performers pantomimed the majority of the play. The performers did a good job of conveying the imagery use of cooking, opening doors, and eating food. The performers were so believable that your imagination wasn’t very hard to use because things came to sight as if it was really on stage. The costumes of the performers set the age of the play and made you believe that you were in an earlier day and age. In act one, you follow the lives of the Gibbs family and the Webb family. Dr. Gibbs appears hardworking and is soft-spoken. Mrs. Gibbs is good in portraying that her husband is overworked and should take a vacation. Rebecca is George’s little sister. George seems scared or nervous in the delivery of his lines. There is many long pauses before he speaks as if he has forgotten his lines. He wasn’t enthusiastic at all. George seems not to understand or express the character's motivation. In the Webb family, Mr. Webb is great in the delivery of his lines. Mrs. Webb portrays a strict but loving mother. Emily Webb their daughter is very bright and hopeful. Wally Webb is her younger brother. When Emily and George are talking to each other at their windows, he seems to forget his words. Without a stellar Emily, the emotional potential is lost. The cast seems as if it was dead before act three of the funeral. Act two is about love and marriage. This scene reflects the love between George and Emily. In act two, Emily rises as the star of the play. She is very clear in her words and motivated.…

I saw the blur of black before I heard the screech of my tires on the scorching summer concrete. The crunching sound of metal on metal rang through my ears. I felt the frigid cold of my dairy treat hit my bare legs. My body jerked as the car swerved towards the highway. 1 hour earlier, 9:00 pm on a mundane Friday night, I was lounging around with my closest friend when an idea popped into my mind. “We should go get Dairy Queen!” I suggested to Gracie, my weary friend next to me. She gave me a cheshire smile and we were off. Little did we know, things were about to head downhill. Literally.…

All my fantastic illusions were broken. On the first day of my vocation, I was too busy finding my hotel and protecting myself that I didn’t have time to enjoy the view of this city. I had 30 more days like this ahead of me, and I wondered what I should do to get through those days. I was so anxious that I couldn’t go to sleep even though I was so tired after my sixteen hours of flight and my struggle all the way from the airport to the hotel. Auspiciously, at this time I got a message from my friend, who said that he thought what I was doing was really brave and he envied me having such an opportunity. Then I realized what I had already accomplished. I found my way from the airport to the hotel in an unfamiliar city where most people don’t speak English, without GPS or Internet. A few hours before I had thought that this was impossible. Those proved that I could go further. I realized that if I could do this, I could certainly solve any other problems during my trip.…

    Loathing In California

When asked if they missed the community feeling of the Midwest, many people said they did not, and even those people who had not listed the closeness as a reason for leaving did not seem to miss the community environment (51). Today's Californians have maintained similar principals of independence and anonymity. In the cities, many people do not know their neighbor's names. To many, it seems cold and uncaring, but it is a normal aspect of California culture. There is community across California, from the largest cities to the smallest suburb, but it is often overlooked because it does not meet the traditional standard of community. In California, people can be themselves without fear of judgment on a large scale; it is socially acceptable to be socially unacceptable. Even today, California beckons to people from across the miles; the call of freedom and adventure still lures people to its borders every day. And once inside, once they become a part of the California Community, they can feel truly free to express themselves any way they see fit, because California is a land created by misfits looking for a place to call…

My adolescent legs strain as I continue along the path aimlessly and my stomach rumbles in emptiness as I realise, I left without food. How can one think of such things at a time like that? I most certainly didn't. Just minutes before leaving for an awesome party one doesn’t remember to do a lot of things and now the only thing dwelling in my gut is the sore pain that was the increasing hate for the cruel beings that have abandoned me here. Lost in my thoughts, my melancholic walking pattern is disrupted as my foot catches on a thick branch in the deceptive darkness and I fall swiftly face first into a small jagged rock. Dazed, I lift myself up from the ground and dust myself off. My left eyelid closes automatically as blood rolls down the top of my face. Cursing, I wipe my face with my white sleeve, soaking the cotton a blackish red instantly. The shock disperses and pain sets in, sharp agony mixed with a strange tingling sensation on my forehead.…

As I sit lazily on the couch, zoning off, I think about the upcoming weekend, and whether or not to drive 2 and a half hours to go to my mom’s house. Every week, again and again, I continue to make the same drive to see the other side of my family. “Why do I do this?” I think to myself.…

But, before all this there was one unchanging variable: my hometown. It was all I knew and all I thought I would know. In Marble Falls, everyone was content with who they were in the community. There was no pressure to impress anyone or be somebody that you weren’t. This attitude created an overwhelming sense of comfort and security. My biggest worries were often as petty as beating my brothers in rounds of “Mario Kart” or getting the game winning strikeout in front yard baseball. Sure, the first thing that comes to mind is that I was living in a bubble, and yes, I was definitely living in a bubble, but I lived truly loving every minute of life. However, I was young and naïve and like my ancient ancestors, I failed to realize there was another side to the world.…

But on this particular night, a humid night at that, there was absolutely no sound to be heard. Not even the squeal of a tyre edging around the street corner, or the cackle of an old man passing by. Feeling the aching in my wrists turn to a sharp pain, I peered down at the several plastic bags that I was holding; full of the essential shopping that I had gone out to get last minute for dinner. One of the bags (the one that was hurting my wrists) was clearly overfilled, but I couldn’t do anything about that, not now, in the middle of the street. Letting out a heavy sigh, I carried on walking, reaching carelessly into my pocket to clasp my phone. In the humidity, it felt lovely to have the cold, metal block against my hands. I pulled it out, feeling around in the darkness around me for the switch to turn it on with. I paused, under a spot in which the moonlight was beaming down upon on the road. Underneath the only source of light in the pitch black city, I checked my phone for any messages or calls that we important. There was nothing, apart from one message from my sister telling me to buy her some magazines. I hadn’t and since I had already come out of the shop and had begun my walk home, I wasn’t going to go back just for her sake. Feeling even hungrier as the time sped past, I decided that it would probably just be better to go home so that I could eat as quickly as possible. My stomach however, had other ideas. The loud rumble that came from deep inside it, suggested that I should eat preferably sooner rather than later. Ignoring it, I crouched down and scooped up my plastic shopping…
