PART I: SHORT RESPONSE
Directions: Write a 1-2 page response to the following prompt using proper APA Style.
Prompt: Select an event during which a specific, intended message was delivered successfully. The event could be based on fact or fiction. For example, perhaps you watched one of the President’s speeches on television, or maybe you watched a movie in which a character delivers an effective speech.
While in the military, you are forced to sit through thousands of speaches. Most of which you ignore, sleep through or forget five seconds later. A speech that was delivered successfully to me in my career was the ever infamous “Suicide Prevention”. After watching many of my brother lose their lives to suicide, it was something I paid close attention to when the topic came up. I probably heard this speech nearly ten times with many different approaches. The last time I heard this speech was by far the best.
At first you think to yourself, oh no. Not another speech, but then the lights dimmed at the Millennium Hotel conference center in down town Cincinnati. It was dark until the projector began the first slide show. It was a man who had lost soldiers overseas. This hit close to home. We had all just gotten back and lost many brothers. Then the Chaplin comes down the middle discussing how “Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem”. I mean, how can you argue with that statement? It is true.
During this speech, the Chaplin utilized things such as reaching out to our families who were sitting beside us. The Chaplin addressed how important it was to discuss suicide prevention even though no one really wants to talk about death. He spoke from the heart with conviction, personal experience and PowerPoint with video slides. The videos were powerful but kind of
