Quotes and Commentary
Q: “The devil was coming also.”
C: This is significant in this story because it is so ironic. It is found ironic because in the end of the book we find out that Mr. Pluto is not the devil, but just a sick old man. This is also significant because the entire story revolves around Mr. Small and Thomas finding out if Mr. Pluto really is a devil.
Q: “ ‘Three of them,’said Mr. Small softly, ‘and they’re exactly alike.’ ”
C: This Quote is important because throughout the story Mr. Small and Thomas think that the triangles are apart of a puzzle, or that they are a warning. In reality it was just used for slaves to find their way to freedom and the Darrows had put them there to give them a good scare.
Questions and Answers
Q:Why doesn't Mr. Small call the police when he finds the three triangles in his home, and the fourth one in his office? Why doesn't he call them when he and his family come home to find their kitchen vandalized?
A: Mr. Small doesn’t call the police because he feels that he is smart and he can figure it out himself. Also because he and Thomas both believe that it is Mr. Pluto who did these things and know they can catch him.
Q: Why had Dies Drear developed the tunnels?
A: Dies Drear had so many tunnels because he was more then likely a conductor on the underground railroad. With this responsibility he had to make sure he had a place to hide the slaves so if someone came looking, the slaves could hide somewhere other than obvious places like the basement.
