this contraption creates. Hover-boards provoke lethal, critical and horrendous incident such as death, fires, and injuries. This in which, caused miscellaneous opinions on such a gadget. Yet, even after all the mishap, part of the initial buyers still decided to use the hover-board, and new users still decide to go along and purchase them. However, an opposing side rose and battled against such device.
An issue that is still rising today is that hover-boards can be astonishingly lethal and dangerous. In March of 2017, CNN published an article about an incident caused by a hover-board. “A 3-year-old died over the weekend in a fire ignited by a recharging self-balancing scooter in her Harrisburg, Pennsylvania home.” Not only did this toy kill a sweet innocent little girl but also “The blaze, which began before 8 p.m. Friday, sent six people to the hospital” (CNN 2017). This is absurd, not only is this a recent issue that removed a little girl from the world, but this gizmo has caused kids to receive massive injuries. A report was written about an eleven-year-old; Aaron Ohebshalom. He was at a friend’s house when he came across this interesting device. As any kid unaware of the mishaps the device causes, he got on. “The hover-board shot out from underneath him and his head slammed into the pavement, leaving a nasty bump.” (Raymond) Yet, this was not the end of it. After complaining of a headache that he started developing, waking up disoriented, having foggy memory of his own mother, and hurling, the Ohebshalom family took Aaron to the hospital. “They discovered a subdural hematoma—bleeding on the brain above the front left eye” (Raymond). What a speechless occurrence. A dead daughter and a seriously injured son. The device is taking lives, injuring people and putting materialistic items at risk. This is not healthy for humanity, yet no one has done anything to add a drastic change to these tragedies.
It is startling, the fact that people still decide to purchase and use this item as an entertainment device. People are building something that is harmful and takes lives and just putting them into society. Hover-boards are unpredictable; they can explode, ignite and fall apart at any given time. An American media website CNET that consist of published reviews, news, articles and other things stated “According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 12 incidents in the United States where the lithium ion batteries in these hover-boards reportedly caught fire as of December 2015, destroying bedrooms and even entire homes. In July 2016, the CPSC updated that number to at least 60 reports of hover-board fires totaling over $2 million in property damage” (CNET 2017). Housing that has much memorabilia and that was passed from generations to generations was destroyed in the matter of seconds, by a 23.23″x 7.32″x 7.01″board. This situation is vicious, and the fact that people still have a desire to use this is unimpressive. More issues have still occurred. “According to owners and witnesses, some of the hover-boards exploded while charging, others while riding and one while it was simply sitting near a kiosk in a Washington shopping mall” (CNET 2017). This evidence displays how unpredictable mishaps are. People recommend not leaving hover-boards unwatched, because of the unsuspected problems that occur. The people who still decide to use hover-boards are only making the negative impact on society greater, by putting the community at risk.
Although, to every con person there is someone who believes in the positive side of situations.
An example of this situation is an article written by Zach Perry on December 29th, 2015 titled “Consumer Alert: Pros & Cons of Buying a Hover-board” in this article, Perry talks about pros and cons that he has discovered about the item that raged through the United States. Some of these pros consisted of “Convenience: If you’re within a short distance between destinations and don’t feel the need to walk or drive no problem. Your hover-board can go up to 10 mph and travel between 10-15 miles per charge.” (Perry) However, every pro has a con, which, even Perry had listed “Exploding hover-boards: So far the federal government is investigating 22 reports of hover-boards catching on fire. Lithium ion batteries in the hover-boards have caused issues of overheating, and some to even burst into flames, which have destroyed bedrooms and even entire homes.” (Perry) This helps enhance the fact of how impractical hover-boards are to society and how many people merit the lives of other individuals. Society is not in a safe position when incidents like these are
occurring.
Overall, hover-boards have had a massively negative impact on society. Purchasing hover-boards should now be an unable act in society. For the safety of all individuals, the protection from the possibility of fiery disasters, explosions, and massive mishaps. The lives people have are sufficient over an overpriced contraption. Excitement people receive from these devices is the same excitement received by going to a beach and taking a breath-taking height with extraordinary views. Paying over three hundred dollars for and unexpected yet highly possible incident to happen is just not worth it. Viewing the world without an electronic is much better experience anyways.
