One of Antigone's flaws is her loyalty to the gods and, on the other hand, her disloyalty to the state. Antigone seems to value religion more than the law. At the beginning, Creon orderes that Polynices, Antigone's brother, must be kept unburied because Creon thinks that he was a traitor. This is offensive to Antigone, and she is willing to do anything to honor the gods and bury her brother, even if it means getting killed for defying Creon's laws.…

Creon’s pride and Antigone’s stubbornness create Antigone’s central conflict and create devastating consequences. Antigone loses her life, prompting Creon’s son and wife to commit suicide. Creon is forced to live with the guilt of the deaths of those dearest to him knowing that they were a result of his selfish actions. These events could not have turned out any differently due to how deeply engrained Creon and Antigone’s flaws are. Antigone is so determined to bury her brother that a potential death sentence and words from her sister do not deter her. The motivation of doing what the gods want, honoring Polyneices, and her stubbornness cause her to be unafraid of punishment. This is illustrated when Antigone says, “This death of mine/Is of…

In the Iliad, the characters of Hector and Achilles carry similar traits, although a deeper investigation into each character will show some stark contrasts between the two. Victory and defeat is not the most telling sign as to which is the greater hero of the two. There are flaws within each character and each one fights to overcome them throughout the story. By the end, it is clear which one emerges as the most appropriate symbol of a hero. The character of Achilles is greater than the character of Hector because he was able to overcome more of his character flaws to become a more realistic portrayal of what a heroic character should be.…

In the epic poem Beowulf, it stated, “that mighty protector of men/ Meant to hold the monster till its life…(313-315).” This shows that Beowulf protected the people and that he was a good person. In the epic poem, The Iliad, it states, “Would god my passion drove me/ to slaughter you and eat you raw…(191-192).” Achilles only killed one person. He didn’t protect and entire village and/or colony, but only for selfish reasoning. He had all this power, but only killed Hector.…

One similarity that both plays have is the use of honor. In both plays there is someone very honorable. Brutus is the most honorable character in “Julius Caesar”, and Antigone is the most honorable character is “Antigone”. They both broke the law to do an honorable deed. In doing so, they both ended up dead because of their honorable deed. Also, they both acted upon the divine law of God and did it only because it was the right thing to do, not because they were ambitious.…

In this society women were not thought of very highly. They were thought of as mothers housekeepers but never a leader. They had no important political roles and did not lead anything in this society. This is shown with Creon who does not like to submit to anyone but would never submit to a woman. The foil between the two sisters shows how society thought of women. Since Antigone was not like most woman and stood up for herself she was thought of as bad while her sister was thought of as perfect. This is a good example of how men thought of women during this time…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

Sophocles, an ancient Greek playwright, is the author of the prominent play named Antigone; the third of the trilogy. Even though one would usually think that ancient Greek theater is dull, one can learn a lot about themselves while reading them. While reading this story myself, I found that I correlate to the main character herself, Antigone. The character intrigued me; for we think and speak similarly. After finding this, I kept discovering more and more connections between the two of us. Separating into three different categories, Antigone and I are similar by Appearance and Surroundings, Personality, and Relationships with Others.…
