How are bystanders portrayed in literature and film (use two examples)? Are they judged negatively or given a pass by the authors or directors?
In the several films and books that we have reviewed up to this point in the class, we can see that there a many people had their own opinion concerning the Holocaust and the tragic events that took during that epic period in history. Once Hitler had achieved influential level of control over the government, no one could have predicted that this would have been the outcome. These actions taken by Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime lead to incarceration and the death of millions of innocent Jewish people. People frowned down of these bystanders for a number of reasons like, not helping their people, not fighting to stop the movement and for just sitting back and watching while so many people were killed due to hate. This type of hate was displayed by Koves, the Jewish teenager that was forced to live in a concentration camp, which he did until the American’s invasion in 1944-45 played by Marcell Nagy, in the film titled “Fateless,” by Lajos Koltai. After, he returned home you could see how he would just stare at those bystanders, Jewish and non Jewish as they would ask him questions about his time in the concentration camp. Since the Nazis were continuously on the move trying take over and gain control of as many countries they could possible get their hands on. Hitler’s ideas reached far beyond the borders of Germany. These emotions were felt and express by citizens of countries like, France, Greece, Poland, and Belgium in addition, to the other countries the Nazi had occupied at this point. Also, around this time, more people starting to get the idea that Hitler beliefs were extremely radical and that there wasn’t any substance to his argument; they were now stating their concerns. Plus, mass amounts of guilt started to be seen by the citizens across the entire continent.
