Subsidies are used by governments for many different things. A subsidy is when the government gives a person or business money to help them. For example, the WIC program is a subsidy used by the government. The WIC program provides mothers with formula and other essentials for their babies. They will help provide for the children up until the age of five. This is a great help to low income mothers. Since formula is very expensive, not all mothers can afford it. This is a good program because it helps mothers provide for their babies. This also keeps many mothers from completely quitting their jobs completely and relying on the government.
There is also a lot of government money for single mothers trying to attend college. College is very expensive and by the government helping mothers pay for college, this gives them the chance to get a degree. Since many places will not hire you without a degree, this gives mothers the chance for them to get a …show more content…
good, steady, well paying job to provide for their families.
Food stamps are also an example of subsidies.
Food stamps are used to give food to people who cannot afford it. Although food stamps are used by people who do not need them, there are many families that do. Groceries are very expensive and by providing families with food stamps this allows them to get food for free and put their money toward other important things such as transportation, clothing, and their home or apartment.
There is also government money for first time home buyers. There are many different ways the government helps people and businesses. Overall, the government uses subsidies to help people buy things they need that they couldn’t afford on their own. Many people abuse and misuse these subsidies, but there are people that truly need the government's help to live and provide for their families. I think that it is good that the government helps people in need, but there needs to be a way to avoid helping people that don’t truly need
help.
5). Why do developed countries devote more resources to health and welfare issues? Developed countries devote more of their resources to health and welfare issues. They countries would not have gotten to where they are without working on health and welfare issues. These countries put time and money into research. They are trying to learned more about the viruses and diseases that are all around us. They use research and try to great immunizations to try and prevent people from getting the diseases and getting sick. They are also constantly working to try and find a cure from many diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s/ Another big part in how countries devote more resources to health and welfare issues is the education we are provided. From the time children are in elementary school all the way through their adult life they are constantly learning about their health and how to be and stay healthy. In schools, they monitor the food the cafeteria is serving because it has to meet certain health requirement. We learned the long term effects smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco have on people, such as cancer. We are also taught what long term effects smoking has on the body. We also learned how drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine, or meth, affect the mind and body. Students are required to take health class, which they learn many of these things. Developed countries, such as the United States also require that students different healthcare screening done before they can attend school. They are requirements to have a hearing screening, vision screening, and dental screening. Students are also required to have physicals and shots before entering certain grades. This is done in order to try and keep students as healthy as possible. Overall, developed countries devote more resources into health and welfare issues because they need to keep the people of their countries safe and healthy. They must continue to keep researching and trying to find cure for diseases to keep the people of their countries healthy and prevent them from getting sick.
9). Why is combating unemployment not a simple thing for governments to do? What is something that governments can to do reduce “natural” unemployment? Unemployment is becoming a major problem in the United States. Many people do not want to work and it is not possible to make people work. Many people try and live off the government or other people instead of getting a job. Many of the people’s jobs are being taken over by technology. Technology had taken a huge number of jobs. This makes the unemployment rate go up. It is hard to find a job if you do not have a college degree, but many people do not have the money to attend college. Now businesses are trying to do more with less and are letting people go in order to try and save money. An example of this is in the hospitals, nurses are now being given more patients to take care of because they hire less nurses to try and save money. Now at the grocery store you have to bag your own groceries. Before, they would bag your groceries and take them to your car for you. Buy in order to save money they have cut that position. They also now have self checkouts which are more convenient for shoppers, but they take away from the jobs of the cashiers. Many people avoid using the self checkouts because they do not want them to take away from the jobs of the people. This is also an example of how technology is taking over jobs of the people. The larger businesses are buying out the smaller businesses and taking the jobs from the smaller businesses. Also many large companies are moving their factories to foreign countries because of the cheaper labor. When large companies that employ thousands of workers move, that put thousands of people looking for jobs. For example, Nabisco just moved their large plant to Mexico trying to save money. Although there are many people unemployed, the government is doing their best to try and create jobs. They need to keep large companies from moving their large factories to foreign countries for cheaper labor and have them stay in the United States and provide jobs for the people.
