Yet, he won the heart of American people and became the 16th president in 186. After his victory, Southern states believed that it will destroy their way of life because slavery was very big issue, the north wanted to get rid of slave system, whereas the southern states economy was depended on the slavery and they wanted to keep it.
Even both northern and southern democrats did not like President Lincoln on many issues; Unlike They believed that the states should not be separated at any cost. Southern Democrats, Northern Democrats supported him for the issue of Unity of the states. Many southerners believe that while Lincoln Publically declared that his goal was to “preserve the Union,’ he actually destroyed it. Republican Party opposed the idea of slavery but Lincoln himself never said he wanted to end the slavery in the South. Though, he was against the idea to bring slaves to the new
territories. During Lincoln’s Presidency, South viewed him differently then north did. Southern people viewed him as a military dictator who wanted to destroy the “American way of life” by destructing the superior civil society. He was also disliked by his own party of radical republicans. Radical republicans thought that he was too weak to act on the abolishment of the slavery. While, the south planters thought that he was being harsh on the southern life style.
He issued an emancipation proclamation and freed the slaves in the rebellion states. The slaves got their freedom. Some people argued that Lincoln was freeing slaves for his political purpose and this issues brought controversies. Until after getting freedom, African American were treated very badly in the southern states. Some historians believed that it was Lincoln, whose decision to issue an emancipation proclamation paved the way for the civil right movement after a century of Lincoln issuing the proclamation.
