How Did Christopher Columbus Discover America
There have been many arguments over Christopher Columbus and his discovery of America. Although many can argue that he was not the first to discover America because there we natives there long before he arrived his discovery led to centuries of exploration and utilization of American land. Christopher Columbus had a hero's heart and was willing to go on an expedition far from home to a far away land. Although his intentions were not to find America he still ended up finding it. Many argue it was luck and that he was at “the right place at the right time” and this may be true but it was his willingness to go and explore the unknown that led him to his discovery. Columbus was willing to do what no one else was willing to try. His discovery led to many more discoveries and is the stepping stone that led to our states and country. Not only did he help Europe to expand and grow but he also treated the natives well and was willing to learn and work …show more content…
No one can say that if he did not go on the expedition the natives would be still alive and prosperous because there were other explorers and they would have gotten there eventually. In document D, it clearly states that “If Columbus had not crossed the Atlantic in 1492, some other explorer - perhaps Vespucci or Cabot- would have done so a few years later.” Although this may make you think that there is nothing important about him because if he hadn't gotten there somebody else would have but he was important because he had different motivations. Columbus was not motivated by “greed for gold nor ambition for

I find it interesting that we were raised up to think that Columbus was this great man who found America in 1492. After reading this first chapter we learn that he was a greedy cold blooded lying killer, he killed thousands of people and lied about what he was doing. He used the innocents of the Arawaks and basically wrote their death certificates. By tricking them into showing their gold and then taking all their people back to Spain was cattle. If it wasn’t the Columbus’s men killing and enslaving them it would be the diseases that they brought with them from the old world that surely exterminated the Arawak people (Burnett III).…

In fact Christopher Columbus didn’t discover anything, because there were many people already living in America, prior to his arrival. There is also evidence that Vikings from Europe had landed in America 500 years before Columbus did. On the bright side, the news Christopher Columbus brought back to Europe letting them know there was land to the west inspired many explorers and settlers who came after. Which is one of his only major accomplishment because without him in a way, none of us would be here today.…

He had four voyages to accomplish his goal, which was to find the new land that Europeans did not know. Since 1484, he suggested supports for many trips to kings or queens in Spain, England, Portugal, and France but all those plans got rejected. Later, he got supports from Queen Isabella and King Fernando from Spain. Christopher Columbus started to make treaty with them. He suggested to have ten percent of money that he earned, one eighth of all trade was his, and wanted himself to be a governor if the land was colonized by him. Queen Isabella and…

Many attribute Christopher Columbus with daring and ingenuity for having the initiative to sail into the unknown and discover North America. In reality, however, it was a mission doomed to failure. He ignored the (accurate) counsel of the top scientists of his day, insisting that his hypothesis that the world is round (true) was possible but if it was true then there would be an arc much larger than his calculations indicated between Europe’s west tip to the east of Asia, specifically India. Had he not stumbled upon North America, which he thought was India, (Hence Native Americans being referred to as Indians) his men would have mutinied or perished from dehydration or starvation. His folly led to an accidental discovery of a new continent, but was not based on his greatness. Rather, it was based on his ignorance and…

Who was the navigator, colonizer, and explorer extraordinaire that fearlessly journeyed the seas and “discovered” the great “New World”? It was Christopher Columbus, of course! However, in reality, Columbus didn’t actually discover the Americas. Rather, he traveled to an already-inhabited land with not-so-civilized inhabitants, and expropriated both the land, and the indigenous people. By doing this, he brought settlers from Europe, who helped take over the land, causing plenty of suffering and havoc, but also completing the map and transforming life for people around the world. Some believe he was a hero, and some believe he was a monster. However, one man’s gain is another’s loss in most cases. Columbus brought change, both good and bad, through his actions, which defined his character and personality.…

Is it as David Eagleman describes in his article The Moral of the Story; that it is a moral and humanistic obligation to persuade those who are young, that great things are accomplished by only those who are good natured and that the land they live on was discovered by a courageous and heroic man? This is only made clear in children books which are littered with aspiring visualizations of Christopher Columbus sailing to shore and graciously becoming good friends with the Native Americans. But sadly this description is far from the true nature of Christopher Columbus because behind his false heroic legacy is a gruesome reality. The Christopher Columbus whom we are taught to admire is responsible for stealing land from the indigenous population, causing the deaths and disruption of many Native American lives, which by current humanitarian dictates is…

One of the most common misconceptions about this day is that he discovered the "New World", which is far from true. Many civilizations and settlers had already been living in these lands, as well, centuries before Christopher Columbus many explorers had landed in the Americas. When he had a river in what is now the Bahamas, there had already been native tribes living amongst great…
