The Pros And Cons Of Columbus Day
In 1492 Christopher Columbus set out on a voyage of discovery (Discovery for his civilization group, for what he found was already inhabited), a voyage that would inadvertently shape the world. Today, over 500 years after his initial voyage, we still discuss the consequence of this voyage. Columbus Day in the United States is a holiday that was celebrated as early as 1905, and became an official federal holiday in 1937. Presently the debate has risen on whether this date should be recognized or celebrated, with places such as Los Angeles along with other cities moving to replace the second Monday in October to Indigenous Peoples Day. In this paper I will argue why we at Cal Poly Pomona should not “Celebrate” Columbus day, but why we should …show more content…
It must first be pointed out that, however ineffective, Spain did try to stop the unjust treatment of the indigenous people, as Axtell writes “…we abolished the enslavement of peaceful Indians, prohibited their cruel and unfair treatment in a series of laws…” (Axtell, 1992:1). Despite the intentions of Spain, the actions on the ground of the Conquistadors proved detrimental to the lives of the original inhabitants of the Americas. The Spaniards would go on to place these people into slavery to toil in the mines. Axtell describes some of these horrors that they faced in slavery when he writes “man or woman, was worn out from the burden he was carrying, the Spaniards cut off his head so as not to have to stop to unchain him…” (Axtell, 1992:2). Some of those who witnessed the criminalities spoke out and condemned the actions, but these condemnations would prove to be more proof for future generations that these horrible actions occurred rather than an action in halting them. Christopher Columbus accomplished the creation of a connected world via oceanic passage. That connection as evolved so thru time that now, the whole world is now connected. His voyage also unintentionally set off a reaction that resulted in millions of indigenous people loosing their culture, and lives. These facts on the consequences of Christopher Columbus voyage in 1492 are why Columbus Day should

When I was younger I was taught in school that Christopher Columbus was a brave and determined man who set sail in 1492 in search of a water route to Asia, resulting in him being the first man to discover the Americas. Since then I’ve come to realize that is he anything but that. Higher education schooling has taught me that he in fact did not discover the Americas, and instead was a ruthless ethnocentric man who’s greed led to slavery, torture, and mass decline of Native Americans. Which leads me to my opinion that we should not continue to glorify Christopher Columbus and celebrate his “achievements” with a day dedicated to him.…

The first article accurately describe the terrible horrors that Columbus spreads throughout the land, such as mass homicide, rape, enslavement and plenty more treacherous things that are illegal all over the world. The first article explains how Columbus came to America and the native Americans flocked him with beautiful and mysterious (to him and the Europeans) gifts and treated them like gods yet Columbus writes that the "Indians" are foolish and ignorant. He sees them like tools he says they are well fit and have handsome features so what does he do he enslaves them and cover them with deadly smallpox. Yet through horrid time in history people like Conell find a way to sugarcoat it and only say the "nice" subjects like finding America and spreading technology while people like Howard Zinn spread the ill coated truth of the birth of this great independent country's…

The stories Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress and A Patriot’s History of the United States have a greater difference than they do similarities. Each story has a different tale of how Native Americans were treated by the Europeans. One story told of gallons of bloodshed, torture, enslavement, and overworked Indians, while the other one told of glorified Europeans here to help their fellow man. Even though, both stories had their differences; they do tell of a similar time in which explorers reach the New World and start to establish colonies. The explorers also tried to convert the Indian tribes to Christianity.…

Christopher Columbus was ooking for a new route to the east to get spices because the Turks closed the land route. After two months at sea he landed in the West Indies. He found a new contient, so we were taught. For centuries fishermen and seamen had known the earth was roung. The Turks made money from the land routes being open so they had not reason to close the land routes. Europeans had been fishing off of Newfoundland in 1480's. For thousand of years the Irish an dPhoenicians had visited Canada and New England, Columbus' purpose fro the beginning was not exploration or trade, but conquest and exploitation. the fact that sailors carried small pox, bubonic plague adn influenza killed a very large percentage of the natives everywhere they went. Christopher Columbus day should not remain a holiday because it is just another event on the calendar to keep track of and it could make some native American tribes aggravated if it stays. Even if Columbus day isn’t as bad as it seems, the people have the right to want to get rid of it. Although some people will get mad if this day leaves, they should know that “Columbus was a cruel slave trader who brought about the mass killing of native people.”. Columbus day was supposed to be a day when America was found, but others go deeper than that and want to get rid of it. All people, Americans and Native Americans get to have a say in this, whether it be to stay or it is to…

I think we should celebrate Columbus Day. Though he did a lot of bad things during his lifetime, he did have reasons. He lost his temper and then just became over powered with power. Most of us, if we were in his position would have probably done the same thing. Columbus should be celebrated, but should not really be given as much credit as we give him today. The government should change the name to "The Anniversary of the U.S. or something else that describes the discovery of America that was actually stated in a contract. Because, technically the Native Americans did "Discover" the land first, but didn't actually…

Christopher Columbus is a very important name in history, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in search for India. Christopher Columbus did not reach India, instead he discovered the New World, which is now called the Central America. He landed at the Bahamas where he brought civilization to the native people living in Bahamas. He taught them how to speak Spanish so that the natives would be able to communicate with the Europeans. “Nothing is lacking except knowledge of the language” said by Christopher Columbus according to The New Immigrant. One also says that Christopher Columbus introduced Christianity to the Native people. According to him “I want the natives to develop a friendly attitude towards us because I know that they are…

Columbus is known for discovering America, but he did not because it was already inhabited by other settlers. For instance, “The American Heritage Dictionary defines ‘discover’ as ‘To be the first to find, learn of, or observe’”. (Source 4). It is not possible to discover a place which tens of millions already know about. Columbus also got credit for proving that the world was not flat, and was actually round. This is also incorrect because during that time educated Europeans did not believe the earth was flat, but “the few who did believe so, the ones routinely cited by modern historians to support the medieval flat earth idea, were the exceptions rather than the rule, ridiculed by their peers.” (Source 4). Lastly, Columbus was said to have spread Christianity. The Natives of the Caribbean were demolished within two generations by the Spanish discoverer. None of the generations were “converted to the Catholic faith, which was supposedly a prime motive of those voyages.” (Source 4). As you can see, Columbus clearly does not deserve the credit for doing nothing.…

Columbus day is a national holiday in America celebrating the man that “discovered’ America. The problem is that he did nothing good for America. He brought slaves and disease to America, or what he thought was Asia. Columbus was an Italian, when Italy didn’t want to pay for his voyages he went to Spain's king and queen to ask them for the money, they agreed on the condition that he paid them back. When Columbus got to what he thought was Asia, but in reality was the caribbean islands, he captured slaves and sent them back to spain. This didn’t make him as much money as he hoped because most of the slaved died on the ships returning from the caribbean. When he went back he had the help of hundreds of slaves to help him find gold. When the…
