Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in Italy. He had sailed the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean before he set out on his famous journey west.
He was sailing west in the hopes of proving that the world was round and getting to Japan or China. Another goal of his was to convert the natives to Christianity. After being refused help by the English and Portuguese royalty, he received sponsorship from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. He received a flagship, the Santa Maria, and two smaller ships, the Nina and the Pinta. These ships were caravels. They had rudders, clinker-built hulls, square sails and lateen sails. His ships sailed in 1492 from Palos in Spain towards the Canary Islands. they only had one hot meal a day. Other than that, they lived on ship's biscuit (a dry flatbread), dried bread, cheese and fish. Sailors used various different instruments to navigate and record their positions. A compass was used to keep the ship going in the right direction. They used a quadrant to record their latitude. They also had a log and line for speed and lead and line for depth. All these measurement were recorded in a logbook for use on future voyages. Columbus kept two logbooks - one recorded distances that weren't true and were just meant to motivate the sailors.
