Though walking away from the assignment may seem simple there are still negative implications to go along with the positive ones. Fred’s career could be on the line if he decides to quit the assignment early. The company may look at Fred as a failure the rest of his career and never offer him another position for promotion. Fred also should consider the risk of being fired or forced to resign from the company if he were to return home. If Fred were to quit or get fired then he must factor in his opportunities to get another job where he can support his family. There is also cost involved as it is very expensive for a company to send someone to an assignment aboard. Fred may be responsible for part of cost of moving or his kid’s private education that the company was paying. On the other side of the spectrum, Fred is thinking of the benefits of going back home. Returning home would mean a happy wife. It is important to have a healthy relationship, so if Fred’s wife is happy this can help a lot with Fred marriage and the kids. Fred and Jenny need to sit down and have a serious discussion while looking at both sides of the coin. On one side of the coin, this is Fred’s opportunity to become a partner in the firm if he does well in this assignment. Fred would then have more of a say in the role that he would play in the future of the company. He would also build skills within the Japan culture where he could give guidance to future leaders that may follow him in that role. Fred’s kids have the opportunity that very few children get to experience by going to school in another country. Learning a different culture can be a bonus for them as move through life. Though Jenny is not at all happy this could be a different start for her wanting to go back to work. Understanding the Japan culture could be a huge benefit for her when she returns home. This would enable her to go beyond her knowledge of buying in the United States and open a whole new world of knowing what is takes to buy from Japan.
