The level of severity is measured by color, such as white, grey and black. Nazi’s practiced black propaganda like no other country before. Black propaganda is identified as being from one source, but is in fact from another. This is most common to disguise the true origins of the message. It was used to vilify, embarrass, or misrepresent the enemy, with deceitful lies and fabrications. Around 1929, Hitler hired a man named Josef Gobbels as his minister of propaganda. Minster Goebbels developed extremely successful campaigns using simple slogans and images repeated over and again in order to win public support for the party. The Nazis spent huge sums on newspapers, flyers and posters. Gobbels was responsible for the re-writing of school books and the production of anti-Semitic books, films and exhibitions. He arranged large political military rallies to build support. These were vast, highly organized events with banners and marching bands. Using his own skills of oratory Hitler attracted to the loyalty of the German people. A main aspect of black propaganda is it is exceedingly guarded, secretive and withdrawn from the public. Nazi propaganda was under leadership of Joseph Goebbels, who was able to identify the concerns of all sectors within the German population and use this to create a remarkable propaganda scheme. An example of this is where workers were addressed with posters depicting endless queues of unemployed people, suggesting that Hitler would be able to abolish unemployment – a miracle that was readily accepted by this group. As well as targeting specific groups, Goebbels was able to manipulate a variety of propaganda techniques, from using posters to nursery rhymes to the radio. Propaganda was recognized by Hitler and his men as an important tool for the success of a regime. As Goebbels said in 1934, “Propaganda was our sharpest weapon in conquering the state, and remains our sharpest weapon in maintaining and building up the state.” Practically, propaganda was aimed at winning support for policies and keeping the population contented. Yet more than that, it was aimed to indoctrinate the nation to believe in a ‘people’s community’ and to ‘mobilize the spirit’. Goebbels wanted to create ‘one single public opinion’ that was committed to the regime, yet the effect of propaganda varied across different social groups, and changed over time. Some such as Welch thought the youth was particularly receptive to the regime, while Mason suggests that the working class was more resistant to propaganda. Moreover, effectiveness changed over time, most evidently reflected by the turning points in 1939 when war broke out and in 1943 with the defeat in Stalingrad. Propaganda could be said to be the most successful from 1933 to 1936, while the focus had to be shifted to prepare the nation in the years leading up to the war, and faith in the regime collapsed by 1945 as people realized the looming defeat. More importantly, the use of terror and coercion poses a challenge to the effectiveness of propaganda in generating genuine and active support instead of terrorizing the population into passive submissiveness. I chose to research an example of commensalism. Commensalism is when one species benefits, and the other does not benefit nor is harmed ("How Species Interact"). An example of this between species is when the remora fish, or suckerfish, uses sharks as protection, for transportation, and to get food. The remora fish will, more popularly, use a shark, but will also use a whale, or even a turtle. The species interact by the remora fish attaching itself to the bodies of the shark. It uses the shark as protection against predators, as a means of transportation, and it also eats left over scraps of food from the shark's prey. The shark neither benefits, nor is it harmed.
