Jeremiah was an Old Testament Prophet. He was around during sometime in 600 B.C. His home could be found in the Southern Kingdom of Judah. The Israelites were not acknowledging the laws of God in their hearts. In addition they were boasting about their wealth and power and tormenting the poor and weak. Jeremiah came to them and told them to start treating each other with kindness and to stop worshiping false Gods. The people did not listen to Jeremiah and were cruel to him. They mocked, denounced, abused and imprisoned him. Despite all the people harsh cruelties, Jeremiah continued preaching God’s word. He was assassinated for his faith on Monday March 24th 1980. He maintained a simple lifestyle and was a popular preacher. He never stopped paying attention to the needs of the poor and weak. He often gave up his time and wealth to help those in need. He did this so much in fact that people called him a workaholic in a cassock! However the political and emotional features of San Salvador started to change. Oscar Romero was denounced by the press, attacked by the wealthy Romans, harassed by the security officers and contradicted by his colleagues. They have this in common because Jeremiah tells them to keep the city and the people the way God made them. On the other hand Oscar Romero tells them not to break God’s laws and commandments. Another thing that the two have in common is that they both maintain very simple lifestyles. The reason I say this is because kept his simple home in Judah instead of getting a big house in Israel. Oscar Romero however kept living in his local hospital instead of getting a big house with the fellow catholic leaders. He also never boasted about himself with being Archbishop. I could become “a light in the dark world” by following God’s laws and accomplishing as many works of mercy as I can. I could do this by feeding the hungry ~taking up food collections ~, giving alms to the poor ~ donating my old clothes and toys ~, and visiting the sick ~ going and spending time with elders in my local nursing home ~. What I mean by following God’s laws is making sure I follow his commandments and act like Jesus would. I could do this by talking to someone who seems sad, helping a sibling, friend or classmate, and just saying “hi!” to a stranger because you never know what kind of day they might be
