Joseph Priestley was chemist who discovered oxygen which the most important air in our life. He was one of the most influential chemists in eighteenth century. He was born in 1733. He was born in Birstall, West Yorkshire. His family was successful wool-cloth maker. He lived with his grandmother, but he could not live with his mom. He came back to home after his mom died. He suffered from his serious ill.
He had good education in language, history, and education. He was awarded for his abilities of education and literacy. He spent most of his time in teaching and preaching. He established church, but he had different perspective on religious. He developed teaching techniques to help students prepare them for practical life. …show more content…
He prepared 12-inch-wide glass lens, and focused on sunlight on a lump of mercuric oxide in an inverted glass container. He could find one gas which was really combustible. He called his discovery “dephlogisticated air.” Oxygen had not phlogiston, and absorbed the maximum amount when it was burning. The existence of oxygen was figured out by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, but he didn’t figure out exact oxygen. Scheele just defined oxygen as fire air because it was working with fire all the time. Priestley wrote down about oxygen “ The feeling of it in my lungs.” Oxygen is the most important element in the world. Oxygen makes people breathe, and many organisms can live. Oxygen is in 16 group which needs two more electrons to be stable. The atomic number of oxygen is 8, and the mass number is about 16. That means oxygen has eight protons and electrons, and it has 8 …show more content…
Joseph Priestley invented soda water accidentally because of his new house. He moved his house where was placed next to the brewery, and he saw the bubbles in the beer. He was really curious about bubbles in beer. He thought that dissolve the bubbles in the water. He put a bowl of water over the beer vat, and then collected fermenting beer. When the beer is fermented, it gave off carbon dioxide which was called fixed air at that time. This gas was infused into the water, and it tasted so fresh like Seltzer mineral water. He invented soda water accidentally in 1767. Artificial soda water was cheaper than natural soda water in mineral water. Soda water was well known to relieve stomach ache, and help to digest well, but it was not really helping that much. Also, he did not sell his ideas into the companies or he did not make his soda water into item for selling.
Chemical revolution was began by tension between Priestley and Lavoisier. He was a member of the Lunar Society that was a group of people who invented some new stuffs. He wanted to refute Lavoisier’s found, so he did lots of experiment to refute it. Finally, he found that air could travel through more substances, and this foundations became the base of gaseous diffusion. He kept attempting to refuse Lavoisier's view. Also, Lavoisier kept experimenting to defense his idea, and then he found new chemistry which was attributed to find modern chemistry like conservation
