Abraham Lincoln was a good choice for the 16th president. He wanted this country to be united. He wanted to get rid of slaves but also the Southern part of the United States wanted to keep the slaves. Since they both had different opinions, there was a war that had big battles called the Civil War. Families were fighting each other because of what they believed the country should do with the slaves. As the 16th president, he was dealing with the war and the country as well. The slaves were all set free in December, 1865. The south wouldn't give up because they believed blacks were worth nothing. They wanted to keep slavery and wanted to be in charge of people. The north, however, did not want slavery to last any longer. It was a long fight for slaves to be set free. What didn't help the argument is how Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth when the country needed him the most (Biography.com).
