How Did Lincoln Contribute To The American Civil War

Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States of America. During his time as president, he ended slavery in the south by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and was the president during the bloodiest war in history, the Civil War. Through a rough childhood of poverty and his mother passing away at the age of nine, he was able to become a lawyer through self education and eventually become part of the Illinois Legislature. In January of 1863 President Lincoln issued a war measure during the American Civil War to proclaim the freedom of slaves within 10 rebellious states. When the proclamation was issued there were nearly four million slaves in America. With the proclamation emplaced, it eradicated nearly three million slaves, and greatly reunited the Union and became a war goal for the North. The initial battle that began the American Civil was an attack on Fort Sumter and later surrendered. This led to President Lincoln issuing a proclamation for the call upon 75,000 volunteers to put an end to the South’s attacks. In the Civil War, 620,000 people died, an unprecedented loss of life that transcended the traditional nineteenth-century traditions of mourning: separating families, displacing corpses, and shattering religious ideals of death and dying (Kutz, 2013).
