If Salva hadn't found his uncle he would have most likely been dead. His uncle gave him food, made sure he didn't get left behind, and making him feel more comfortable. Salva thought his uncle would keep him safe " we are together now, so I can protect you!" (35). Salva's was a huge part of him surviving. He kept Salva walking, fed him, protected him, and made him feel that much more comfortable. Salva knew because his uncle had a gun, he had higher authority "uncle was seen by the group as a leader." (35). His uncle had favored Salva so everyone knew not to mistreat Salva.
The final factor was just keep walking. Salva went through pain. He went through a lot of it. But he just kept walking and powered through. Salva thought about when he when he was going to leave the desert, so he would not stop walking so he could get there "only the vision of leaving the desert kept him walking." (61). He powered through the heat, thirst, and hunger. "they trudged through the heat." He was so hot walking through the desert but he just kept walking.
