Ironically, the cause of the Mexican – American War was due to the politics of the U.S. President at the time, President Tyler. Tyler wanted to achieve a second term in presidency, but his name among the American people was not as well known in contrast to his opponent James K. Polk. President Tyler contemplated ways to make himself a more popular candidate, and came to a conclusion that would essentially foreshadow the coming of the war. He wanted his name to be associated with the thought of “American Expansion”, unfortunately he would never get that chance officially because he lost the election. However, in regards to his loss, he still had a desire to finish is initial plan. He went to Congress and made use of the Joint Resolution for an annexation, instead of a treaty. This will require a two-thirds majority agreement that Tyler did not have. On the last day of his term however, he would send messengers to Texas (which at the time was not a U.S. territory) for the purpose of immediate annexation. This would not sit well with the Mexican nation (Heys) .…

Prior to 1860 the United States was already split into opposing sides fighting for power. Although these conflicts never reached the battlefield, the slaves states and free states were always competeing for representation in congress. Each side wanted more states for them to get more representation. To prevent too much conflict, they decided on numerous compromises such as the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. Although these did ease tensions to some degree, they were only delaying the enedible. It started when Abraham Lincoln was voted as president. South Carolina was the leader of the southern states and began the cesession of the states. After Lincoln was inaugurated in 1860 seven states ceded from the Union and soon after four more joined them. The south believed that they had the constitutional right to cede. (Doc A) South Carolina feared that the north would gain enough power over the south that they would abolish slavery in the south. South Carolina felt that their powers were being smuthered so they had no choice but to cede from the Union. This of course was the start of a very bloody war for both the northern and souther states. This conflict led to the Emancipation Proclamation and the freeing of the slaves in the south. However this was only the beginning of the revolution which the nation was going through.…

At the end of the Mexican War, America was given western territories. The problem with the new territories was debating over which states would be free and which would be slave. To deal with this, Congress passed the Compromise of 1850 which basically made California free and allowed the people to pick in Utah and New Mexico. When people are allowed to vote on the way they are governed, it is known as popular sovereignty. Of course many states grew angry because some of them wished to be either a free state when they were already a slave state or vice versa, which caused more…

The Mexican War was one of the most influential events that contributed the increasing separation of the union. Much conflict arose on whether Texas and California should be free or slave states. One of the men who tried to resolve this conflict was Henry Clay. Along with Stephen Douglas, he drafted what came to be known as the Compromise of 1850. It declared California a free state, abolished the slave trade in D.C, gained the New Mexico territory (which was to be organized through popular sovereignty), rearranged the Texas boundary, and passed the Fugitive Slave Law. Although it seemed like a good plan, it had flaws, which disappointed and angered many people. The people of Texas were angered because, a large portion of their land had been taken for New Mexico (Document A). It seemed that what angered one group, made the other happy. This was all because of the growing disunity over the ridiculous question of slavery.…

Although civil war led to loss of many lives about 620,000, it was worth its cause. Civil war led to the end of slavery and preserved the union. It also brought many changes to America. It made America take a step in a new direction. It I feel as though slavery has been abolished the hurt is still there. Slavery was a terrible phase for America. I think the civil war should always be remembered and be kept in mind as we move on as a nation. “In the end, the Civil War determined what type of a country we would be—united; and what type of a people we would be—free.” (NPS 26)…

If the outcome of the Civil War was different and the South had won the war, there would be a countless number of changes in history. A few of the most significant effects would be the changes of Southern territory, changes economically, and the continuing dilemma with slavery. If the North were to lose the Civil War, the South would unquestionably conquer the Northern territories. With the South conquering Northern states, those states might also become slave states. The South may want the new Northern territories to work on a labor system similar to states with slave labor. Although, the North was much more industrialized and could depend on factories, which was different from the South which mostly depended on manual labor for farm plantations. Another major change would be differences in the economy after the war. The South would not have to suffer as much as they did because they could carry on using slave labor. They would not need to figure out a new system to profit from their farm plantations. The industries in the North would be taken over and would also contribute to the Southern economy. Reconstruction for the South would not take as long because of a well off economy. Also, by winning the war, the South would continue trade with England. That would be a large factor in their economy. The largest difference of all would be that slavery would continue afterwards and the thirteenth amendment to abolish slavery would not have passed. Even though slavery would continue, it probably would not continue forever and would end sooner or later due to economic troubles. Slavery carrying on would harm the economy and would cause issues later on, forcing it to come to an end. If that did not happen soon enough, then someone would have perhaps tried to put an end to it again. That would not happen as soon as the South won because it would take a while for reconstruction and for someone to attempt ending it once…

Manifest Destiny created conflicts between many neighbors, and one would eventually lead into the Mexican-American War. The idea that the U.S. wanted to expand itself all across North America was a cause to the war. As many started settling in, the idea that the United States had a “God given right” to get this land became more and more common. The U.S. offered an amount of money to obtain Mexico, but Mexico declined, which the U.S viewed as a problem. The annexation of Texas lead to increased tensions between both countries. Texas eventually revolted due to the way their government tried to run province. The Treaty of Guadalupe helped resolve this conflict, which was presented under terms that Mexico would give up 50,000 square miles of land…

“America’s wars have often been controversial” (Roden 317). The Mexican- American War was not an exception to this rule. Many Mexicans felt that they were cheated their land. On the other hand, the US felt it was their destiny to conquer the whole North American continent and Mexico was in the way of their greatness (Roden 317). The belief in Manifest Destiny, that the USA started the conflict, and that the US had no right to Texas are all reasons that the US was not justified in taking about half of Mexico.…
