One of the reasons was his wife Marie-Antoinette spending so much money on luxury. Like how she spent an astronomical amount of money on building an entire town just so she could go play peasants. Which really made the third estate very angry. She also spent a lot of money on clothes and jewelry. She did this all while France was in debt from war. For example, they were in a lot of debt from the seven year war and helped in the American Revolution. With all of this crippling debt. No other country wanted to give France a loan because they knew there would be no way for them to pay it back. King Louis XVI's response to this was to increase taxes on the third estate.
