Agricultural advances helped create much more efficient ways of processing food. An example would be the invention of the seed drill which was invented by Jethro Tull. The Enclosure Movement then came into place which was when wealthy farmers bought land from the small farmers which benefitted both sides because they ended up gaining money in the economy from the large scale of farming. This movement allowed for more food and a population increase too. The farm owners eventually didn’t need as much farmers so the workers started to lose their jobs. Many workers were out of work but not for too long, because they began to be needed in the cities to work in the factories. This initiated urbanization and several more jobs came about. More people working in the cities enabled a cheaper source of labor. The workforce changed from labor intensive jobs such as blacksmiths and specifically skilled set jobs to factory jobs that didn’t require nearly as many specialized skills. More people meant more consumers which supported the new consumer industry. Consumer culture rose due to the middle class mainly making more money, so they spent more money on products. Essentially, the products became cheaper, because they were produced in factories. Josiah Wedgwood helped the middle class buy more goods too, because he was a pioneering person who invented several new products and came up with new ideas. He is credited with helping the Consumer Revolution, because he influenced many other businesses and people who copied his ideas and made for a better economy. One of Wedgwood’s more popular inventions that he financed was the Turnpike. Because a lot of his products were very fragile, he wanted to come up with a new invention that would transport his goods without breaking them. The turnpikes were also very helpful for the people, because it allowed them to get into the cities much more efficiently. This was also better for supply and demand.
