than the other.
The checks and balance did work in the Watergate scandal the way federalist expected.
The Watergate scandal began in 1972 during the Richard Nixon presidency and his re-election campaign. On June 17, 1972 Five men were arrested in democratic national committee office headquarter (DNCH) at the Watergate towers, while attempting to repair surveillance equipment’s. After the trails of the 5 buglers, one of them who were a former CIA agent had a link with the white house. President Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign was connected to the break in attempt to wiretapping phones and stealing documents and information from the Democratic Party office. The plan for Watergate was set by Nixon re-election committee and high level advisers; the purpose of the Watergate was to secure information to undermine the Democratic campaign against Nixon. Nixon didn’t know about the plan until it happened and order a cover up that was against the law. He was believed to trying to stop the investigation by the CIA that was being investigated by the FBI. Also Nixon started to pay hash money to people. scandal, but there reports did not have any effect on the Nixon re-election. Nixon tried to destroy evidences and fire people such as the special prosecutors Archibald Cox and unsupportive members. Nixon was also believed to have the tapes of the Watergate break in and the white house secret tapes. Nixon denied giving the tapes when asked by prosecutor; later the supreme court order to hand over the tapes, Nixon had no options and turns it in with editing. Later the conspiracy caught up to him and congress ordered impeachment or removal from executive power and office. Before his impeachment by congress he resigned from office. Nixon was the first president of the United States to resign as president. After his resignation new president Gerald ford came to office, who was the first president not elected to either the presidency or the vice presidency.
The checks and balances was a system created to ensure an equal distribution of authority within the federal government of the United States.
Also prevents one branch of government from gaining too much power. The Federalists created the executive branch for the president, judicial branch for the Court, and legislative branch for Congress. The Congress can check the president power by overriding presidential veto, impeachment, and remove from office. Also the procedure for congress to remove the president from office by impeachment by the house of Reps. Then the judicial committee appoints special prosecutor to investigate the crimes against the president and then present it to the House. After that the case goes to the senate and if 2/3 votes and finds him guilty, president is removed from office. The congresses also have congressional committee which monitor on going government operations, identify issues that are reasonable for legislative review, gather and evaluate information, and propose course of action to the senate. The judicial branch checks the legislative branch and the executive branch by using judicial reviews, deciding if both branch followed the constitution
correctly.
Checks and Balances did work in the Watergate scandal the way federalist expected it would. When President Richard Nixon was asked by the prosecutor to hand over the tapes in 1973, he refused it to give the tapes. He used the executive privilege for not giving the white house secret tapes and not disclosing it. When Nixon refused to give the tapes, the judicial branch steps in and the United States Supreme Court orders him to hand over the tapes. Nixon had no option but to agree to hand over the tapes and comply with the investigation. This was a way how the judicial branch checked the executive branch. On August 9, 1973 senate committee files suit against Nixon for not complying with the subpoena. Later on during the Watergate scandal the house of judiciary committee began voting on articles of impeachment against Nixon for his crimes that he has committed. During July, 1974 the house of judiciary committee brings article1, 2, and 3 of impeachment and charging President Nixon with obstruction of stop the investigation of Watergate break in, violation of executive oath of office, abusing powers and fail to comply with House subpoenas. Before the cases went for a trial to the senate and to avoid impeachment President Nixon on august 9, 1974 resigns from office, making him the first President of United States to resign from office. This was a way of how the legislative branch checked the executive branch.
