The literal definition of an independent film is a ‘professional film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system’ so slightly big budget films can be considered independent films like Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs. These films were also easily accessed through big cinemas rather than just small arthouse cinemas. There was also a wider viewing experience, as a lot of films can achieve success when they’re in a lot of cinemas rather than just one or two. If a film has a large advertising budget, then it is more likely to do well, especially if it seems quite innovative.
If an independent film uses popular genres (like crime or drama), they are more likely to achieve success than one that is apart of a niche market as popular genres can appeal to a wider audience. Sometimes the target audience just wants to sit down and watch a film that has a good narrative and isn’t filled with big special effects like a lot of Hollywood films. Indie films offer a new take on things, usually having characters that you can relate to and real issues rather than how ‘Mars Needs Moms’. Also, when a film is about something people might know about (like The King’s Speech for instance), they are more likely to see it.
Though, now-a-days, audiences are getting tired of watching films that have very little plot and make up for it
