By the end of the novel, The Chocolate War, Jerry Renault was broken down mentally and ruined by the Vigils. The Vigils is a club of the school that only certain people can be a part of, they give people assignments that must be completed no matter what they are. The Vigils are very strong and have a lot of power in the school system. Jen Menzel states in her article, Intimidation in Cormier’s Tunes for Bears To Dance To, We All Fall Down, and The Chocolate War that, “The Vigils have the capability of pulling a few strings and making Jerry’s life miserable through ingenious strategies” (Par. 18). They are capable of a lot more than they let on, therefore the Vigils are the master manipulators in the novel. Archie is one of the men with the…

If he went to the protest he would be struggling with his morals and beliefs and going against his own decisions. The scene that I will be discussing is Harvey Milk’s death scene. This scene is about the final breakdown of Dan White and watching Harvey Milk’s journey come to a brutal and tragic end. The mood of the scene, while this is a terrible and unexpected tragedy, is rather calm. While Harvey does not wish to die and pleads with Dan White for him not to do this, once he is shot the scene becomes calm and tranquil. It is as if the filmmakers were expressing that Harvey is at peace and is accepting that he is going to die. Same with Dan White, while he is in an aggressive state he is also experiencing a calmness of knowing that he did in fact end Harvey Milk’s life, which is exactly what he came to do. Another key moment with Harvey in this scene…

King then delves into the less obvious reasons. He argues that horror movies like to take away the "shades of grey" in life, and invites the view to revert back to a childish mindset, when the world is seen in black and white. He argues that this invitation provides psychological relief for the viewer—that it allows us to revert to a mindset of "simplicity, irrationality, and even outright madness". This is not the only psychological relief that horror movies allow us, however. King makes a point that even as children, we are showered with praise for expressing "good" emotions, and punished for expressing the "bad" emotions. Although this leads to more politically "correct" behavior, it also only temporally holds the "bad" emotions back. Watching horror movies allows us to expressing those bad emotions in a safe, fun way.…
