Atticus represents morality and reason in the novel of To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus believes in justice and the justice system and through this he puts hard work into Tom's case not because he is african american but because he is innocent. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” (Atticus 149) Since the beginning of the case Atticus knew that he was going to lose the case but he believes that man shows courage and whatever h starts he must finish. Atticus wants to shows his kids that they should love everything. "You aren't really a nigger-lover, then, are you?" "I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... I'm hard put, sometimes—baby, it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you."(Atticus 108). This shows that Atticus has respect for every human being no matter the color race or gender and he wants his kids to know that no matter what love one
