Through my study of The Turning by Tim Winton as well as The Black Balloon by Elissa Down. I have learnt that change is completely relentless and that even the slightest or most significant change can turn our world upside down. In The Turning, the concept of change is evident both within each stories landscape and its characters. We see the impact of change and its recognition through characters such Vic Lang through the story “long clear view” and both Bob Lang and Vic Lang in “Commission”. The notion of change is also evident in the character of Thomas from the film The Black Balloon.…

A fixed mindset is when people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They're wrong. People in a fixed mindset believe you either are or aren’t good at something, based on your inherent nature, because it’s just who you are. The fixed mindset is the most common and the most harmful. The fixed mindset believes trouble is devastating. You want to hide your flaws so you’re not judged or labeled a failure. You stick with what you know to keep up your confidence you look inside yourself to find your true passion and purpose, as if this is a hidden inherent thing. Failures define you. You believe if you’re romantically compatible with someone, you should share all of each other’s views, and everything should just come naturally. It’s all about the outcome. If you fail, you think all effort was wasted. In the book “Mindset” “a fixed ability that needs to be proven, and a changeable ability that can be developed through learning (Dweck 15).”…
A mindset in life is to worry about oneself and his or hers priorities, but that mindset can enlarge and take over other priorities or wants in one’s life. A story that represents that mindset enlarging is “Contents of a Dead Man’ Pocket” which is about man not going to the movies with his wife so that he can stay home and work. A different story that shows this is “Catch the Moon” which is about how a kid is forced to work at a junkyard and there he meets a girl asking him to find her a hubcap. In both stories the main character is faced with a conflict that makes them really that they had been selfish about themselves. The universal theme for both stories is when one is consumed in his or hers own world then they will miss out on life around them, causing one to enjoy their life more fully.…
Many people feel as if they try their best to change someone or something, eventually they will. However, they will not. This message seem to be predominantly clear in the short story The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst. In the story, the lives of Doodle a disabled young boy and his six year older brother who is affectionately called, Brother. Throughout the story, Brother is always trying to change Doodle from his disabled self. Brother wants Doodle to be able to walk and be “normal” so that he does not have to suffer the consequences and embarrassment of having a “disabled brother.” This leads to Brother attempting to change Doodle and teach him how to walk. However this intensive training leads to a tragic death and an unchanged Doodle. This led me to the discovery that however much one may try, someone will never succeed in changing somebody/something…
