Commitment also affects Sonia Weitz’s book: I Promised I Would Tell. ( Weitz 48) Sonia and Blanca were committed to staying alive, and making sure their mom was okay. While in Plaszow, Blanca and Sonia lied to themselves so they could stay alive and make it through the Holocaust nightmare. Also, Sonia and her father constantly paced in front of the hospital when their mother was sick. They knew the hospital was frequently liquidated, so they would wait and wait to make sure their mother came out fine. Finally, in the Diary of Anne Frank - The Play, written by Goodrich and Hackett, commitment is still present because Miep and Mr. Kraler forged and illegally made extra ration books, to provide the family in the attic with the necessary food and necessities they needed. Miep and Mr. Kraler still did this for the family, even though it was obvious that the act was punishable by death (Goodrich and Hackett 339). Another way commitment is present is how Mr. Frank was the protector for the family. Every single night, he gave up his bed and promised he would protect the family if anything bad was to happen. Commitment is everywhere, including books, like the three I have read these past months. Commitment.
Commitment should and does affect everyone, but it affects me because I am committed to soccer, and trying to make the best team I can. A photograph of me playing soccer will represent my personal visual piece. The photograph taken by my sister connects to commitment because it shows me practicing, and getting better at soccer. I am committed to soccer and being the best I can be because I love it, and I’ve always had the dream of making the varsity team, or possibly something even bigger in the future. I always put 100% effort into my practices and out. I even started to run track so I can get in shape and be in my best condition to play and practice the sport I love. Commitment affects everyone; it’s in everyone’s life, no matter how big or small it may be. For me, commitment is in my life in the form of soccer, I’m committed to becoming a better player, and making the best team
possible. Since commitment affects everyone, some stories of commitment can be more famous and important than others. Some of these stories can change our world and the community around us for forever. An example of one of these incredibly important commitment stories is the historical Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. story. King was a civil rights leader in the 1950s- 1960s who had a great impact on the America we know today. During that time, colored people did not have the same rights that white people had, and the colored people were often mistreated and abused daily. Even in these times, King tried to make civil rights for both the colored people and the white people, even though he was black himself and doing something like this was very dangerous. King gave speeches, and did all that he could so that in America, black people and white people could have the same rights. Sadly, in after his successful attempt, King was assassinated, but he was committed enough to change what had to be changed before he was killed. Another incredible story, is a modern piece called the movie “42”, which is based off of the story of Jackie Robinson, the first African American professional baseball player. Jackie was roughly in the same time period of Martin Luther King, when black people were given barely any respect or rights. Jackie knew he was in a bad spot, trying to be a major league baseball player, but he still did it. After hate, and disrespectful teammates, Jackie pushed through and made it into the Major League Baseball, breaking the baseball color line. During games, Jackie was booed at, hurt, and had the umpires purposely make the wrong calls on him. However, Jackie was committed and ended up changing the world of baseball, and many other American sports for forever. Everyone is committed to something, but some stories, which can change the world around you, are just more important and inspirational than others. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that everyone at some point, at any time has been or is committed to something, no matter what it is. Even though all commitment stories are very important to the person committed, some of these stories make it farther, and can change the world around you as you know it.
