How Does Coraline Show Courage
Coraline Theme : Courage and Bravery In the story Coraline, a girl named Coraline moves into a new home where she is extremely bored and alone. Later on after exploring the house, she finds a bricked up passage way in the wall, but it opens up during the night. She discovers that it leads to a world that is an alternate version of her life only with a slight difference- everything is the way she wants it to be. Everyone there has buttons for eyes and Coraline’s “Other Mother” invites her to stay forever in this dream world with one catch, she had to let her sew buttons on her eyes. Coraline quickly realizes that you should be careful what you wish for, and sees the real side of this alternate universe. It is one big trick to lure her in so that the Other Mother could “eat her soul.” She must rescue her parents from the Other Mother and make it home safely. To do all this Coraline needed to have bravery and courage. A few examples include when Coraline went to explore into the tunnel, when she stood up to her Other Mother, and when she had to get her cat …show more content…
At night though, it opened up a tunnel which lead to an alternate dimension, and at that time Coraline did not know this. In the story it said,” In danger? Thought Coraline to herself. It didn’t sound like a bad thing. Not really.” (pg 21) Coraline is going to venture into a new place on her own, obviously it is going to be a little bit scary, especially since she is going alone. She is an eleven year old girl who is still a little bit nervous to be without her parents. This means that she had to be extra brave to go to a place she has never been too. She had no clue what could happen if she entered that tunnel, and she used courage and braveness to get her through it. The “Not really” part also shows you that she has doubts. She may be scared, but she’s still brave enough to go through with

As a result of her discovery, Coral gains sight and knowledge when she is awakened from her slumber by Tom at the amateur night. After the death of her son in the Vietnam War, Coral was emotionally disconnected from reality. This is evident at the play of A Midsummer Night’s Dream when Coral explains in her soliloquy that she was “sitting there in the dark wiping away tears”. Coral feeling emotional at a humorous play makes it clear how trapped in her grief she is. At the Gold Coast Luxury Hotel, Coral speaks to Rick and says “Come into the dark, give me your hand..a boy like you”. The dialogue conveys that Coral is delusional and is trying to envision Rick as her son by inviting him into the dark. By doing so, it highlights her deep loss for her son and need for a discovery to accept her son’s death. Coral gains sight into the real world, and knowledge that she can continue on with her life at the amateur night. During the play within a play, The Stranger on the Shore, Tom helps Coral to find her legs and walk, in a metaphorical and literal sense. This is Coral’s release from her grief, back into the real world. This gain of sight and knowledge leads to the idea that discovery can challenge the individual,…
