The Legendary Merfolk In The Film, The Little Mermaid

At the beginning of the movie, “The Little Mermaid”, a group of sailors on a ship are telling stories about the legendary merfolk. A young prince named Prince Eric is also on the ship with his dog, Max, and advisor, Grimsby. Grimsby tells the sailors that merfolk are not real, but one of the sailors tells him that he is wrong. One of the sailors is holding a fish, but loses it and the fish falls back into the sea. After the opening credits, the merfolk are heading to the underwater castle for a concert. The kingdom is ruled by King Triton, who is holding the concert in his name. His seven daughters and Sebastian, the court composer, are performing a song for him. The concert is going well until King Triton notices that, Princess Ariel, his
youngest daughter, is not there, which angers him. Ariel is out exploring a ship graveyard with Flounder the fish, who is her best friend.
Once they are on the wreckage, Ariel finds a fork and a pipe. Unknown to them, there is a shark watching them outside the ship. The shark attacks and chases after them, but they are able to escape. They then head up to the surface to meet their friend, Scuttle, who is a seagull. Ariel asks Scuttle if he can identify the items she has found.
He says that the pipe is a snarfblat, used to make music and the folk is a dinglehopper, used to comb hair. When she hears the word “music” she realizes that she has forgotten about the concert and hurries back home. However, she fails to notice the two eels, Flotsam and Jetsam, have been watching her. The eels are working for the evil sea witch, Ursula, who has been banished from the kingdom. Ursula tells the eels to keep following Ariel, in hopes of using her against the king.
When Ariel returns to the castle, she is scorned by her father and Sebastian. Ariel and her father get into an agreement about humans being good or bad. Ariel and Flounder, then leave with Sebastian following them. They go to Ariel’s underwater cave that is filled with human items. When something blocks that moonlight that shines into the underwater cave, Ariel goes to the surface and sees a ship with Prince Eric. Prince Eric is celebrating his birthday and gets a statue of himself as a present.
Out of nowhere, a storm blows in and the ship is struck by lightning, and is caught on fire.
The ship then hit some rocks and the crew has to abandon the ship. Eric has noticed that Max is still on the ship and goes to save him. He is able to save Max, but not himself and gets knock into the sea by the explosion of the ship. Ariel is able to save Eric and takes him back ashore. Eric hears Ariel singing, but is not able to get a clear look at her face before she goes back into the sea. He knows that a girl saved and wants to find her.
As the movie progresses, Ariel has been found by Sebastian, who tells her that her father cannot know about this. Over the next couple days, Ariel has been dreaming about Eric, which makes King Triton think that she is in with another merman. Sebastian is called by the king to ask him about Ariel. Sebastian accidently tells the king about Ariel’s trip to the surface. At Ariel’s cave, Flounder shows Ariel the statue of Eric, saying that he was able to save it. They are interrupted by King Triton and Sebastian. Ariel tells her father that she saved Eric and he destroys all of her treasure.
After the king leaves, Sebastian and Flounder try to comfort her, but she tells them to tell her alone. Flotsam and Jetsam then come and convince o meet Ursula. Ursula tells Ariel that she can make her human in exchange for her voice for three days. However, before the three days are over, she must get a kiss of true love or she will belong to
Ursula.
