I enjoy learning about other cultures and cultural traditions, and this will help me with future clients. If I am not willing to learn about other cultures, my work as a social worker will not be beneficial. It is important to gain an understanding of the different growing populations in the United States. Diversity can also have an impact on a person in the environment that he or she grows up in. If an individual is raised in a diverse city or town, he or she is more likely to be open and aware of the experiences of those who are different from him or her. An unhealthy environment might consist of a child living in a loving home, but the neighborhood or even the school that the child attends can have a negative impact. If the child is raised in a neighborhood where a lot of the kids get into trouble, then that child is at a higher risk to get into trouble too. However, an unhealthy environment can also look the exact opposite of a healthy environment. A child might be raised in a home that is neglectful and contains abuse, even though the family lives in a safe, well-kept neighborhood. An indication of an unhealthy environment is simply that the individual is not functioning well in much, if any, aspects of their life. It is likely that there will also be a lack of trust.
