Rapport/Strengths/Resources/Client Systems/Barriers/Diversity:
Paul (therapist) and Laura (client) seem to have a good rapport with each other.
Effective Communication Skills/Social Work Skills (goals/clarification/redirecting/confronting/tasks/reviewing & evaluating/termination):
As far as effective communication skills, clarifying and redirecting, Paul is continually “steering” Laura and the conversation.
Social Work Knowledge (Diversity/Social & Economic Justice, Populations at Risk/Human Behavior in the Social Environment):
Clinician’s Proficiency( in problem assessment/appropriate intervention strategies):
Social Work Values & Ethics:
He points out the ethical issues and suggests that she is using the relationship with him as an excuse not to commit to her boyfriend.
Risk Assessment & Ethical Dilemmas:
The code of ethics is clear about boundaries and relationships with clients and these ethics are in clear danger. The sexual suggestions made by the client present a clear danger for the therapist and possible future malpractice issues.
Transference/Countertransference:
I think there is definitely some transference happening with Laura.
Self-Assessment:
I did not really experience much countertransference in this episode except that I have experienced feelings toward someone in my life that was inappropriate because of their position or because of mine, much like someone may see a therapist. In my case I was aware of the negative situation and did not pursue the relationship or the person. I have often wondered how I would react if someone projected these feelings towards me as their counselor or therapist. I hope that I could react as Paul did initially, remaining calm and reminding her of the situation and the ethical dilemmas, hoping to save the therapist/client relationship and not harming the client.
