Critique of Clinical Session
The clinician begins the clinical session by welcoming Terri and thanking him for coming to the session. Throughout the clinical session the clinician positioned herself so that she was facing the client but still kept her body at a slight angle so that she was not directly across from him. I noticed that their bodies were in close proximity and that their knees were almost touching. The helper made sure to keep eye contact throughout the session and kept her hands crossed in her lap. The body positioning that she used allowed her to be open and comfortable with the client. In the beginning of the session the clinician established trust through her facial and body expressions. The clinician smiled, laughed at the client’s humorous remarks, and nodded whenever he spoke to show she was attentively listening. I also believe that the helper demonstrated trust through her ability to express empathy for the client. During the session the clinician seemed genuinely interested and focused on everything that the client said. A safe environment was established through the therapist speaking calmly and in a pleasant manner to the client. The ways in which the clinician helped establish the relationship with the client were through unconditional positive regard, personal warmth, and genuineness. Through the session the helper listened to the client without any interruptions. The clinician also made sure to be accepting and non-judgmental of anything that her client discussed. Reflective listening was used towards the end of the session. At this point she reflects back to him, “You mentioned doing something different from the job you have now,” and then Clinical Session 2 proceeded to ask a question in reference to that. At the very end of the session the therapist summarized the key points of the therapy session. She then proceeds to discuss the goals that Terri would
