M.C. Escher was a Dutch artist from the 20th century who spent his life on woodcut printing. Escher made many woodcuts throughout his career but his pieces Metamorphosis l-lll and Day and Night both symbolize change and how society is made. Both of Escher's pieces showed conformity and individuality in them. The art pieces Day and Night and Metamorphosis l-lll both are alike and different in many ways involving technique and the main concept of the pieces.
Day and Night and Metamorphosis l-lll both show examples of conformity and individuality. Day and Night shows conformity with the birds coming together and flying. However the birds are also an example of individuality because the white and black birds are flying in opposite directions so the two groups of birds are individual from each other. Metamorphosis l shows conformity in it by the city turning into a man. I think this shows that the city is representing society, and the society is conforming the man into himself. He shows movement through the artwork in Day and Night with the birds flying and moving to the opposite sides. In his Metamorphosis l-lll he shows movement from one side to another. Whether it is shapes turning into designs or a city turning into a man, Escher shows the technique of movement throughout his work in all of his pieces. Color is added in Escher's Metamorphosis ll while in Day and Night it is only black and white. Since Escher adds color to the right side of Metamorphosis ll it shows movement from the left over to the right because the color is slowly added
