Moral development is a process in which a child goes through up until their late teens early 20’s. This process is where the child develops the understanding of how people should treat each other. The development changes as the child gets older going through various stages where different morality levels are in place. This essay will look at moral development and relate it to the well-known film series of Harry Potter. After studying Piaget’s theory Kohlberg took his own take on the theory. Piaget’s theory has only two stages. Stage one being when children believe that rules cannot be changed. The second stage is a very broad stage as there are many different aspects to be taken into account in this stage. Firstly, the child starts to understand that rules are flexible in certain situations as long as everyone approves. When Harry is at Hogwarts school he makes friends with Hermione and Ron. Throughout the film they get up to mischief and into trouble Harry only does this because when questioning his friends if they believed it was ok they agreed even though it may have been against school rules Another part to this stage is that children at this point now understand that some decisions should be based on keeping people around you happy. For example if somebody asked you to borrow a pen to do their work instead of saying yes because you’re scared of them punishing you, you say yes because you want them to be happy. Children also start to base decisions on intentions and motives. They decide if something I wrong by looking at what reasons there would be for it to be wrong not because somebody told them it was wrong. This stage in Piaget’s theory is similar to the second stage in Kohlberg’s theory but Piaget believes that judging something through intention is part of stage two whereas Kohlberg believes that this is the beginning of stage
