Kipling’s Characterization of “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”
To demonstrate Rikki’s bravery in “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” Kipling uses characterization. One way to use characterization is with other characters interactions, an example Kipling uses is, “The valiant Rikki-tikki caught by the head and held fast”(Kipling 471). Darzee is singing the story of how Rikki fought Nag and killed him even though Rikki could have died. Rikki is fighting Nag with his life, so he can save his family. Another way Kipling portrays Rikki’s bravery is through his enemy by stating, “At the bottom of his cold heart he was afraid ”(Kipling 467). Because Rikki was brave enough to fight a cobra, Nag
was afraid for his life. Rikki isn’t even full grown but since he is intrepid he will fight Nag anyway. Kipling uses characterization to demonstrate Rikki’s bravery.
