The basis for the story of good and evil is most often the Christian biblical stories in the book of Genesis. The classic battle of good and evil with good always triumphant over evil often stretches farther out and into our many cultures. This archaic tale is ever prevalent in all of mankind’s greatest stories in many different variations. John Steinbeck often brings this struggle to different methods of thought especially on how we view evil, as well as good. He brings this story to light using the everyday, common man in his books, Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men and now East of Eden to portray the realistic side of the battle of good and evil. Many will argue that he does not have a very clear goal for presenting this idea including, John Fontenrose, in his literary criticism, “John Steinbeck: An Introduction and…

Rikki never gave up and in return, saved the garden. I realized that there are many possible themes in this story. One being, if you put your mind to it you’re bound to succeed, but my theme is correct, of course. You can tell that Rikki is a hero easily. When he kills Nag, he rescues the family from a surprise attack in the bathroom.…

The short story that I had analyzed was Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling. I decided that characters, figurative language, and plot all gave a significant amount of support to the development of this story. Without these components of the story, I feel as if the story as a whole would not be at the level that it is at now.…

In today's world good and evil coexist, often in one entity. The choices that humans make determine whether or not the world should consider that person good or evil. Many people make bad decisions in order to achieve a good outcome. However, most struggle with the choice of what to do. Central to John Steinbeck's East of Eden the theme of good vs. evil shows through the description of landscape, Samuel Hamilton, who represents supreme goodness, and Cathy Ames Trask, the most evil character in the novel.…

East of Eden underscores the search for love and the means of obtaining self-importance by loved ones as the characters through the generations symbolically reenact the story of Cain and Abel. The author John Steinbeck successfully tells the story between the Trasks and the Hamiltons where the reader journeys into the families’ deep background and prepares for the drama and captivating storyline. In particular, the novel parallels to the Bible story in Genesis four where Steinbeck highlights enduring themes of good vs evil, the choice in life, and murderous jealousy through his unique characters to convey the works meanings and morals. First published in 1952, the book received enormous popularity and acceptance with the general public in which…

Throughout the course of ones’ life, one encounters various forms of good and evil consistently. Often, examples of good and evil are not clearly defined, and this leads to difficulty in defining the distinction between the two. To be able to find the difference between the two terms, one must understand what each label really means. According to Google’s dictionary, good is defined as having virtue, righteousness, high morality, and integrity. On the contrary, evil is defined as pertaining to immorality, malevolence, and dishonorable actions. Although there are widely accepted definitions of good and evil, the final decision is up to the person facing the situation. In East of Eden, John Steinbeck…

In all humans, evil exists. At some point we have to release it, and want to release it. For example, on the island Jack and Robert showed their evil while beating Wilfred, or even Robert who was hurt while the boys received pleasure out of his beating. Roger states, "He's going to beat Wilfred, I don't know why, he didn't say," (pg.159) as he giggles. Another example is when Robert is beaten by the boys for no reason in frenzy where he is the pig. They chant in chapter seven, "Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!" (pg. 114). These examples clearly show that the…

In Shakespeare’s, Macbeth, the character lady Macbeth appears as an innocent woman, when in reality she is corrupt and evil, revealing that things are not always how they seem. As Lady Macbeth says “That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty!” This shows how she is starting to fall apart. By Lady Macbeth wanting to completely change her sex also shows how she doesn’t feel complete being who she is and she feels the need to be more masculine. Lady Macbeth slowly shows how she is becoming more evil through the quote “My hands are of your colour, but I shame to wear a heart so white.” This represents how Lady Macbeth was able to get her hands bloody despite the evil murdering…

Most students (and readers in general), tend to associate the themes of racial injustice and existential social inequality with the renowned novel To Kill a Mockingbird, but I find that a more important message that is conveyed in Mockingbird is that there is no defining rubicon between the areas of good and evil in the human psyche, but there are blurred areas of reasoning and thinking which cannot be placed into classical domains of psychology. Thus, it can be said that humans are not strictly dark or light beings, but have the capacity for both, and are both. Hence, a “non-dichotomy” of sorts.…

Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird focuses on the theme that there are good and evil in this world, and with that comes good and evil people. Jean Louise “Scout” Finch describes the position that her father, Atticus, in is when he has to legally defend a black man named Tom Robinson, who has been falsely accused of raping a young white woman. All through the trial, Scout and her older brother, Jem, witness their father’s strong moral principles and observe the bias for the white community that they have never seen in detail before the trial. Although Scout’s interactions with positive individuals encouraged her to grow, her interactions with negative individuals in her community benefitted her more because she was able to improve her…

When this happens, it shows the first example of the struggle between good and evil. Markheim gives in to his evil side and murders the man just so that he can rob the store. This evil side of him takes over his body and convinces him to murder the man in cold blood. Another example of the struggle between good and evil can be seen in the symbolism of the figure that appears to Markheim as he is about to rob the store. The figure tests Markheim on just how evil he is willing to be, and it makes him think about whether or not he really wants to commit these evil deeds without remorse (124-132). This is another example of the theme of good versus evil because the figure that appears symbolizes Markheim’s conscience. His conscience is trying to help him decide where he stands on this fight between good and evil, and it actually helps him decide which path he wants to take. The figure helps Markheim as he has an internal struggle between good and evil, and the figure makes him realize that in reality, Markheim is not truly evil. The final reason that the theme is good versus evil is shown when Markheim finally confesses his crime. At this moment,…
