The white workers mostly hold the most prestigious and rewarding jobs in the company. However, in sharp contrast with the positions held by whites workers, the Chinese workers are significantly over-represented in manual jobs. “ Whites are more likely to find jobs through informal sponsorship networks that place little emphasis on formal credentials, while black applicants tend to be more strictly on the basis of their educational credentials and experience” (Vallas, Finlay & Wharton, 2010). The black applicants disadvantage is similar to the Chinese in my workplace, where the whites applicants usually have the advantage over the Chinese. This shows how the racial and ethnical inequality makes it hard for Chinese to attain higher level occupations and better paying jobs. For some, on the other hand, any job providing pay is better than no job and no way to provide for their family. This is why there are so many over-represented Chinese workers in the manual labor section. Hence, while all employees have a difficult time maintaining their dignity and engendering disrespect from managers or customers, such issues may be especially potent for workers from more disadvantaged social…

The glass ceiling effect describes the invisible differences in appraisal, salary and position between men and women. Racism may also be seen in the myths that certain races may be better or worse in certain abilities. Because of a lack of familiarity with other races, people are more likely to unconsciously discriminate against others (Sherman, 2000). Racism has had serious damaging effects on the United States culture and society. These effects are expressed through language, ideas, schools, language policies, economic stratification social segregation, housing markets, hiring and promotional schemas, minority members’ psychological issues and minority access to a variety of social services and opportunities. Racism is prevalent in American society and remains a silent code that systematically closes the doors of opportunity to young and old individuals. Visibly identifiable members of racial and ethnic oppressed groups continue to struggle for equal access and opportunity, particularly during times of harsh economics, dwindling natural resources, inflation, widespread unemployment and underemployment, and conservative judicial opinions that are precursors to greater deprivation. Unless curbed, these conditions invariably lead to greater ethnic and…

The most disadvantaged male visible minority group is Latin American men, who kept this status even after the adjustment for variables. Some groups were shown to have even lower earning after controlling for other variables, for example, West Asian men went from -$3746 to -$9930 after adjusting for other factors (42). Both Caucasian Men and Women made more than their visible minority counterparts, before and after controlling for other variables. Although, Female Caucasian professors still made $2000 below average. Li also discovered that after controlling for other variables, native- born Canadians earned more than Canadians of immigrant status. Because productivity was not measured in this study, Li acknowledged the validity in arguing that these discrepancies could be due to Caucasian counterparts having a higher level of productivity. To weaken this argument, Li conducted another study on university professors in Canada, under the age of 32. Age was considered to be a way in determining the level of productivity, and since professors under 32 are considered to be novices, productivity shouldn’t have a large emphasis on the results. As predicted, the inequalities in pay turned out to be very similar, with Caucasian male professors earning the most. There was one anomaly present, which showed that Women in the “other visible minority” group had the highest gross income level as well as the highest net income level. In conclusion, Li suggests that the most logical explanation for the results is that the unequal pay gap between university professors in Canada is due to (i) differential treatment, in other words, discrimination and (ii)…

People tend to assume one’s work ethic is the same as the stereotypical person of their race. A boss or owner of a company could be biased on a person’s skin color. In certain establishments and companies people of white background get paid a higher salary than those of differing backgrounds. This is typically because white people are portrayed as being wealthier than Hispanics, blacks, or Asians and demand to work for a higher salary under better conditions. Whereas hispanics are typically portrayed as a hard worker even under minimum wage and poor conditions. Mexicans battle this issue dramatically also; they are excellent workers, but often do hard manual…

Roos, P. A. (1981). Sex stratification in the workplace: Male-Female differences in economic returns to occupation. Social Science Research, 10(3), 195-224. The study causes the idea that there is a large earning gap between men and women. Gender differences in earning are important because it focuses on the gender-based inequalities of power at the workplace. The author of the study used a literature review to explain the gender gap in earning, and it showed that sex segregated characteristics still remain at the occupational level. It shows that women work at low paying jobs and they are less likely to use authority in those jobs. The main reason why there are gender differences in earnings is the belief of human capital theory, and it has a huge concern with the supply side of the market. The researcher used a non-institutionalized English speaking population to explain the data for gender influenced gap in earning. The sample included 959 men and 670 women. The results showed that women are paid low wages, and are in positions of low responsibility. Even when a women reaches a higher level job, their earning is much lower than that of men. The results also show that women’s low income is mainly because of their job characteristics, in that men and women are distributed differently across jobs. Men earn more than women, mainly because women are not considered employers. The study demonstrated that the characteristics of the workers create inequality at the workplace; this is also a reason for why there is a large gap in earning between genders. Human capital theory discourages women from working and it presents women as low rent employees. They have less understanding of the mean of production. The characteristics of this research show improvement in the earnings of men and women.…

“The jobless rate among black males has increased sharply since 1969 in the large central cities of the Northeast and Midwest,” affirms William Julius Wilson in the article, “The Truly Disadvantage: The Inner City, the Underclass, and Public Policy.” Even when blacks find jobs, racial discrimination is visible because they don’t have the equal opportunity to succeed within the area they are in, as whites do. Racial discrimination has created a segment of labor market where whites are more likely to be promoted and…

Throughout the years men have been superior to women in labor and in gender. It’s no surprise that even to this day men are still at a higher level than women. It is a fact that women are paid less than men by a vast amount. During the American Revolution women were mostly at home serving as house maids while men did work labor and brought home the money. In the year 1970, white men were paid 100 percent of their earnings while white women got paid 58.7 percent, there is no denying the difference in the wage gap between genders. In addition, the wage gap didn't affect gender only it affected race and ethnicity. In that same year 1970, black men got paid 69.0 percent of their earnings while black women got paid 48.2 percent, it was always men that got paid more and women left behind with barely enough money to feed a household. These percentages didn't change in any way…
