A Christmas Carol by Mattison. Hansen English 8th 10/23/24 Charles Dickens in the book A Christmas Carol wants us to understand how our attitudes and actions affect how we enjoy our lives. Dickens uses characters in the book to show that our attitudes can have a negative or positive affect. He wants people to stop being grumpy and enjoy life so that they will have people who enjoy their company and miss them when they are gone. Dickens uses the Scrooge as the main protagonist in the book as an example to show that even though Scrooge is very rich, he has been unfulfilled in life while his poor nephew is happy and enjoys it and tries to share joy with everyone. The charters that Charles Dickens created for us to understand this are Scrooge, Fan, the spirit of Christmas present, the spirit of Christmas future, and how Scrooge changed from Benning to the end of the story. …show more content…
He is a grumpy man that hates everything. Scrooge hated Christmas shown by when he said, “Bah Humbug” (4) to his nephew when he was wishing him a merry Christmas and trying to invite him to Christmas dinner with his family. Even when his nephew was trying to share Christmas spirit with Scrooge and his family, Scrooge told him no in a rude tone. This shows that Scrooge hates the holiday seasons and doesn’t enjoy people celebrating the holidays. In chapter 2 we meet the character Fan, who is Scrooges sister. In the story, she is shown to be a sweet and kind girl who helped Scrooge come home from boarding school. Fan said “Dear, dear brother, I have come to bring you home, dear brother!” She uses a grateful and loving tone when she is talking to her brother Scrooge and telling him that their father wanted him back for the holidays. This shows the attitude can affect people in a positive way, when Fan told Scrooge how happy it was to see him, she made Scrooge happy
