In this novel, Steinbeck uses his character Crooks to show loneliness. Character dialogue was one way Steinbeck showed loneliness in his novel. Crooks says to Lennie, “You know he’s goin’ to come back. S’pose you didn’t have nobody. S’pose you couldn’t go into the bunkhouse and play rummy ‘cause you was black.” (Steinbeck 72). Character interactions is used by the author in Of Mice and Men to show the need for companionship. Curly’s wife questions Lennie about why she can't talk to him because she gets so lonely (Steinbeck 86). This indicates that Curly’s wife doesn’t get social interaction. Steinbeck also uses character dialogue to show loneliness. Curly’s wife sadly explains, “I get lonely,” she said. “You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curly. Else he gets mad. How’d you like not to talk to anybody?” (Steinbeck 87). In this quote, it suggests that Curly is the reason that his wife is lonely. Lastly to show the need for companionship, the author uses internal conflict. Curly’s wife contemplates, “I tell you I ain’t used to livin’ like this. I coulda made somethin’ of myself.” She said darkly, “Maybe I will yet” (Steinbeck 88). From this quote, the author can infer that Curly’s wife is lonely because of the decision she made to marry Curly instead of chasing her dream. Curly’s wife clearly shows the need for companionship in Of Mice and
