How Does Stretching Affect The Distance Of A Rubber Band
The lab was completed to determine the stretching affects the distance that a rubber band will travel. My hypothesis is the distance a rubber band will travel from its launchpad will be at its furthest when the rubber band is stretched to its furthest length. The independent variable was the was the amount of distance a rubber band was stretched and the dependent variable was the distance a rubber landed measuring from the launching pad to its final resting place. The control variables include the launching pad and the method of launching the rubber band. The rubber bands were of different lengths in millimeters and also of different widths in millimeters. In addition to the rubber bands a standard 12” rule was used to measure distances. The ruler contained markings for centimeters and millimeters so no conversion of values was necessary. The experiment followed a specific procedure. The procedure for this experiment was performed by following the nine steps that were presented with the lab packet. I would introduce more constraints for the characteristics of the rubber bands used, such as ensuring the same quality and same manufacturer. I would also limit the number of differences between the two rubber bands and decide upon using the same thickness or the same length. Also with regards of procedure, I would try to determine the most stable and consistent means of launching the rubber bands. Lastly, would want to limit the factors that would impact the overall distance, such as the surface of the launching area and how the distance was determined. For example, the bounce of one rubber band prior to landing can skew the overall statistics. Each of these changes would make the experiment more stable and provide more confidence in the overall
