How Does Temperature Affect The Rate Of Osmosis
The process studied in this experiment was osmosis, more specifically, if concentration gradient or temperature would affect the rate of osmosis more. To address the effects of concentration gradient, the dialysis tubing was filled with different percentages of sucrose solutions. To address the effects of temperature, these different solutions were placed in beakers at different temperatures. Our key observation is that temperature affected the rate of osmosis greater than concentration gradient did. These results proved our hypothesis, If the concentration gradient of sucrose solution is higher than the solution outside of the dialysis tubing, then osmosis will occur faster because water moves toward solutions with a higher concentration.

    This experiment gave a visual understanding of osmosis and diffusion. The first experiment proved that solutes would move down a concentration gradient if permeable to the selective membrane. The second experiment proved different solute concentrations affect the movement of water, depending on the solute concentration inside the cell. First, colligative properties are “those of a solution that depend solely on the number of solute particles present, not the identity of those solute particles.     Results/ Discussion: The effect of the chloride ion on its rate of diffusion in agar means it will diffuse faster because it is more concentrated. We graphed the diffusion of chloride ions rather than sodium ions because while the sodium ions do diffuse in to the agar the chloride ions from the NaCl will combine with silver ions, from AgNO3 and create a white precipitate. The white precipitate allows us to measure the the white band through the agar at different points and determine the rate of diffusion of the chloride ions.
