In this experiment osmosis is the main process taking place. Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules of a solvent which pass through a semi permeable layer and in most cases are due to a concentration gradient meaning that the water molecules travel from an area of low concentration to one of higher concentration. In this investigation, gummy bears of different colours (dependent variable) were placed in different concentrations of glucose (independent variable) over a certain period of time.In addition to that, the color of the gummy bears was also observed to see if the color could influence the rate of uptake and ultimately the change in mass of the gummy bears. In essence, water molecules from the glucose solution move through the semi-permeable membrane of the gummy bears, thus creating a change in mass of the gummy bear. The controlled variables that had to be established to increase the precision and accuracy of this experiment were the following:
The time in which the gummy bears were placed inside the solutions of glucose: this could increase the number of water molecules passing through the semi-permeable membrane of the gummy bears hence increasing their mass
The temperature of the solutions in which the gummy bears were placed: increasing or decreasing the temperature could eventually lead to a faster/slower osmosis rate knowing that heat increases the rate of osmosis
The concentrations of glucose: These need to be kept constant to keep the osmosis rate constant for the set of concentrations. If not controlled this could result in a change in mass of the gummy bears and less precise results.
The amount of solutions: The volume of water was constant for every trial because if the volumes were not equal for every solution, then it would allow for some gummy bears to take in more or less water molecules
