In the experiment, as the size of the cube decreased, the absorption rate increased, showing that the smaller cells absorbed more sodium hydroxide than bigger cells. The smaller cells were able to absorb more sodium hydroxide as they have a bigger surface area to volume ratio causing them to act more efficiently than the bigger cells. The smallest cell had a ratio of 1:12 while the biggest cell had a ratio of 1:2, leaving a gap of 5:12 causing the bigger cell to act less efficient in absorbing the solution in a period of 10 minutes. Also, as the size of the cube increased, the surface area increased more quickly than the volume such as the difference between the volume of the biggest (3cm) cube and the smallest cube (0.5cm) was only 26.9 ㎤ …show more content…
The majority of the organelles were able to receive the nutrient in the 1 cm cell and almost all of them in the 0.5 cm cell. This is caused due to the larger surface area to volume ratio as the cell size depends on the efficiency of the material to flow in and out through diffusion. Through diffusion, the organelles in the cell receive all the vitally needed nutrients to survive. If there is a big surface area to volume ratio such as 1:2, then this process will be delayed due to the sodium hydroxide having to cover a larger distance resulting in the cell is not functioning very efficiently. If the cell is smaller, such as the 0.5 cm cube, the sodium hydroxide will have to cover lesser distances, causing all the organelles to receive proper nutrients at the right time and carry out their work faster. For instance, if there was smaller surface area compared to volume, such as the biggest cube, then there would be hardly any surface area to exchange materials through substances. Another reason why cell division might take place is due to the increase in surface area of volume ratio. Mitosis helps the cell by keeping it in the original size and ensuring that diffusion is performed easily and thus resulting in the cell working

This experiment looked if the surface area to volume ratio affected the speed of a chemical reaction. For this experiment, a film container was filled one-half full with water. Then an Alka-Seltzer tablet was added, quickly covered with a cap and was observed until the film cap popped off. The time was then immediately recorded and the procedure was the repeated three times each with whole and crushed Alka-Seltzer tablets. Then results from three fellow classmates' experiments would be recorded and added to our own results. The hypothesis was that more surface area exposed and smaller volume would result in a faster chemical reaction of the material. Since the Alka-Seltzer tablet would be less exposed and have a larger volume as a whole, the crushed tablet was thought to have a faster chemical reaction due to its small volume and larger exposure. The hypothesis was supported. The whole Alka-Seltzer tablet had an average of 7.80 seconds from twelve trials, while the crushed tablet had an average of only 3.56 seconds from twelve trials. For a diffusion system to be efficient, it should have a large surface area so that high amount of substances can be exchanged at a time.     As we all know, many chemical reactions happen within both unicellular and multicellular organisms. Many useful substances have to diffuse into different cells in order to help provide the necessary energy needed for these reactions to happen, at the same time, the waste products produced after these reactions have taken place have to be removed and excreted. As the organism increases in size through growth, more chemical activity will have to happen and the rate of metabolism will also increase, which means that more substances have to be taken in and to also be removed. This is where the surface area to volume ratio comes into place; the reason why this ratio is so important is because the surface area of a cell essentially affects the rate of the transferring of useful substances (through diffusion and osmosis etc.) in and out of the organism. On the other hand, the total volume of the organism also affects the rate of the making of material inside the cell and the ability to hold all of the substances. Whilst organisms are slowly growing and developing day by day, the volume of the organism increases, but not to the same extent as the surface area; this is because the organisms’ surface area increases at a much slower rate than its volume. Through research and experiments, it is apparent that as the organism grows, its surface area to volume ratio slowly decreases, the table to the right also proves that this theory is true; meaning that it would become increasingly difficult for the organism to obtain the required nutrients and also expelling the wastes produced by metabolism. In the end, it becomes impossible for diffusion to occur efficiently, where the cells becomes too large so they would divide through the process of mitosis.
