How Does The Giver Change

At the beginning of the book, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas was just like everyone else, but in the end he ended up being very different. In this essay the author will explain how Jonas changed in the beginning, middle, and end of the book. In the beginning of the book Jonas thought Sameness was the only thing there was. (p.16) “ It was one of, the evening telling of feelings.” This is a tradition in Jonas’ community where the family share all their feelings at dinner time and it’s normal to them. Jonas also thinks it's normal that there is no animals and everyone has the same birthday. (p. 120) “ We relinquished color when we relinquished sunshine and did away with differences.” So Jonas’ community thinks that it's normal that they don't see color. That’s how Jonas sees his community at the beginning of the book. At the middle of the book Jonas is starting to question Sameness in his community. (p.106) Jonas frowned. “ I wish we still had those things.” When Jonas first saw the memory of snow, hills, and sleds, he was upset
(p.218) “ HIs thoughts continued. IF he had stayed, he would have starved in other ways. He would have lived a life hungry for feelings, for color, for love.” This is showing how Jonas is happy he left because he is free. When The Giver shows Jonas what release really is Jonas is very sad, broken, and mad at his community for doing such a thing. (p.189) “ Jonas felt a ripping sensation inside himself, the feeling of terrible pain clawing its way forward to emerge in a cry.” After finding what realise really is Jonas realized how wrong his community is and how Sameness is wrong, The Giver and Jonas come up with a plan to free the community of Sameness.
