Christopher Columbus is usually the name that comes to mind whenever someone mentions natives being converted. He enslaved inhabitants of the West Indies and forced them to convert to Christianity and abandon whatever they had done before the Europeans came. Another example of this is when Cortes conquered the Aztec Empire. When he overthrew the emperor, his Spanish men started the gradual process of converting them all to Christianity. However, when the Spanish made the Aztecs convert, they believed that they were saving the Aztecs souls, so they could go to heaven and not endure hell. While Columbus and Cortes were converting the Aztecs and Native Americans, Francisco Pizarro was tackling the Incas. Pizarro’s men massacred the Incas and the ones that were saved were forced to convert to Christianity after Atahualpa was murdered.
